Vmware Backup

Hi Experts,

Our VM backups are failing with 48 error code.Backups are done via Vmhost. Few days back Vcenter was down. It was up then backup started.

There is one more issue netbackup is not deleting snapshot files on datastore.

Master server 7.5 in windows 2008. VMhost in another system.

1:- Why netbackup is not able to delete the snapshots from datastore? How to delete it? In policy we have seleted orphaned snapshot handling as remove netbackup.

2:-  Can we have more than one VMHOST? what will be the impact if i add one more any advantage?

3:- Is it happening (48 Error) due to some services that need to be started on VMHOST?

Thanks,

1:- Why netbackup is not able to delete the snapshots from datastore? How to delete it? In policy we have seleted orphaned snapshot handling as remove netbackup.

Ans:- Problem with Netbackup 7.6.0.1 server. So we have install 7.6.0.2 or 7.6.0.3 on VMhost server only.

It will definelty solve the problem.

2:-  Can we have more than one VMHOST? what will be the impact if i add one more any advantage?

Yes we can have as per Riaan thanks so very much....

3:- Is it happening (48 Error) due to some services that need to be started on VMHOST?

48 error code was also due to storage unit in media server was not accessible.

Hello,

What are your versions?

  1. 48 is a name resolution issue. How are you specifying the guests? By display name, or host name?
  2. You can have many backup hosts, but that would be determined by your ESX configuration. If one backup host is not sufficient to backup all the guests located on 1 or more ESX hosts you can add more.
  3. It relates to name resolution as stated before. NOt a service.

You should specify you vCenter server as a FQDN and make sure your backup hosts can properly resolve it.

No problem with more than one vmware backup host .. the later versions of NBU let you choose either a specific one or just "media server" in the policy.

All clients backed up also need to be resolvable even though they are not backed up as clients.

If snapshots are not being deleted it may be you have a rights issue so make sure the account you are using has ALL required rights as outlined in this tech note:

Hi All,

Environment is as below.

Master:- Win 2008 with Netbackup 7.6

VMhost:- Win2008

Media server:- Solaris 11

VM backups are running via Vcenter not ESX server. So no clients were installed on Vms

Vcenter is fine. Many backups are running.

Hi Mark,

Its 2008 server not 2003.

Thanks,

Apologies for only replying to your post now...

As per previous replies, status 48 is a name resolution issue.

The backup host needs to be able to resolve the hostnames of the VMs (via DNS or hosts files) although no software is installed on the VMs.

Also verify if logon account has sufficient permissions on the VMs as per Mark's advice.

try bpclntcmd -clear_host_cache on vCenter and media server/master server...

although it generally clears cache periodically... ...could you try below from media server

/bin/admincmd/bptestbpcd -client <vCenter client name> -debug -verbose

from vCenter

/bin/bpclntcmd -pn

bpclntcmd -self

bpclntcmd -hn <media server hostname>

if at all it doesn't work.. on vCenter client just stop NBU services and recycle PBX the start NBU services

then try to attempt above commands.. and check if name resolution are working. (simply try with hostname or fqdn in upper and lower both cases... nbu is not intelligent so far to reckon hostname and fqdn and ip are indeed same host unfortunately)

if this works .. then try to attempt backup..

do not forget to change vm to displayname or hostname and vice versa..

for snapshots not cleared.. try backup again..

orphaned snapshots are removed upon next backup (successful).. its actually stun cycle...
