Hi,
M trying to configure backup through new v center version 5.5.(nbu 7.6.0.2) but the backup is failing with error code 23 Error opening the snapshot disks using given transport mode: Status 23 . I have tried nbd method but backup still fails .My concern while analysing logs i came across path C:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\online_util\fi_cntl. There are many xml ,bid ,0 files of the failing VM what are these files and whether it is related to backup getting failed.

Thanks for the help guys.
Symantec support provided the solution

issue :- This issue occurs when the permissions are not applied at vCenter Server level. This can be seen in VDDK 5.1 and 5.5 only. Earlier versions (for example, 5.0) do not have this issue

for NBD:-
does your backup host able to connect to the ESXi hosts over the port 902 ?
check the 902 port connectiity from the backup host
telnet <esxi host > 902 --> from backup host see if it is connecting.
if not, you need to open the ports in network to get this working.
if you are using SAN transport:-
does the LUNs presented to Backup host?

Yes luns are presented to backup host and telnet is also working . Could u explain what files are stored C:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\online_util\fi_cntl directory

Apart from the obvious stuff .. like not having volumes mapped etc. I have seen this happen when the user set in the credentials section does not have enough rights to back the clients up.
Make sure ALL rights in this tech note have been applied .. and the user is set at the very top level of you vCenter : http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH130493
Hope this helps

User is administrator , Also when i fire backup snapshot gets created at vcenter i guess there is some issue at the backup host end

I don't think you should lose sleep over C:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\online_util\fi_cntl.
I doubt that anything in there will cause backup failure.
You may want to check bpbkar and VxMS logs for clues.
