What is the different between image clean and deassignempty

Hi expert

We usually use "bpimage -cleanup -allclients" to cleanup the images, use "bpexpdate -deassignempty" deassign the expired medias.

I want to know what is  the two commands actual doing on the background?

how to set the image clean and deassignempty behaviour.

The bpimage command cleans up the catalog of NetBackup for all clients that have expired backups - this releates to disk and tape backups

The bpexpdate command just does a similar thing for tape backups and but only in terms of freeing up tapes that no longer have any valid images left on them

So one tidies up the catalog, one tidies up the tape volume database

Hope this helps

There should be no need to do anything, it should take care of itself.

The image clean up that runs every 12 hours runs both the commands you mentioned.  Further, bptm runs a  cleanup for expired media every 10 mins (only seen in the bptm log).

Be very careful with the bpexpdate command, there are options (unsupported) that can very severly mess up the catalog and cause lost data.
