My personal opinion about VTLs can be seen in the 2nd URL:
The only reason why VTL was developed, was because no backup software could address disk as backup device in an efficient and intelligent manner.
NBU introduced Advanced Disk and OST in version 6.5.
Since then, I personally see no use for VTL.

VTL is a staging backup device which is just to store data temporarely and duplicate to Physical tapes with same or different retention..!!
its helpfull whcn you want to recover ant recent backed up data immediately
