Why won't Client Side Dedup work with Shadow Copy?

Regular backups of C: and E: work just fine with Client Side Dedup.  And, in fact, that's the only way that we could back it up due to thin WAN link.  We had to ship a computer there, back up to it first, and then ship it "home" to get the seeding done.

However, any attempt to back up the Shadow Copy (to get the DFS and DFSRS data) using Client Side Dedup times out with a "Check the state of the VSS".  If I turn off Client Side Dedup then it eventually backs up but takes a week or so of constant grumbling from our Network Admin.

The only other way I've found to back up the data, without Shadow Copy, is to use the reghack and scripting option to disable DFSRS during the backup.  But our Windows Admin considers this to be a hack and states that anything designed to work with Windows should support DFS/DFSRS without having to turn anything off.

So, has anyone managed to get Client Side Dedup and Shadow Copy to work?  Or is this yet another case of an under-developed "feature" in the system that looks good but nobody took the time to refine it after it was introduced?

(oh and please don't suggest upgrading to 7.5.0.5/2.5.2.  We had enough trouble with 2.5.1 that we're sticking with the devil we know.  Now, if Symantec would come out with 7.5.0.6 that was pure bug-fix and patch-rollup without any new features then we might consider it).
