Would like to be able run a manual backup of a 'VIP query' from the command line using bpbackup

VIP policies add a lot of functionality not the least of which is the resource limits.    Unfortunately this functionality comes at a cost.   You lose the ability to run a manual backup for a single host for the policy.   You can do restarts for any snapshot job that is still in the jobhistory, however you can't do a 'Manual Backup' and specify a host.   I would to see the ability to do one of the following:

  1. bpbackup -i -p vmware_hosts -s Full -q ‘vmware:/?filter= Displayname Equal “vm_I_want_to_backup"’    -- or any other query, just like nbdiscover
  2. or just have it so that the -h argument to bpbackup automatically wraps the query around it when the policy is using VIP.

You can run a backup in an 'Adhoc' policy easily enough, the issue is that in an Accelerator environment you will have to do a 'real' full backup since the cache won't exist for the new policy.   You can modify the query on the fly and make it so that it will only match a single host, but that is just asking for a type-o or dropping something from the query accidentally.   And automating it is non-trival, possible, but still prone to a failure causing a loss of the existing query.

Hello huffb,

this is a real problem I have on some customer sides too.

We create a copy of the policy (as a backup) and modify the query by adding a criteria to select one client only.

From my perspective there is a lack of functionality. Missing a point for manual backup like "perform query and select single client"

The second point is that accelerator for vmware is using vmwares cbt. So is it possible to use another policy ? How does it work? Some comments from other specialists are very welcome.
