Hi,

Couple of backup failed with status code 84. I have found that all of them run on same drive and media freezed after that. Is it due to drive related issue or the problem with the media?

Check the syslog or Event log (Windows). Is there a SCSI sense key message ?

A "real" write error is sense key 3 ASC 03 ASCQ 00

But may also be 3 14 00 Medium Error - record not found

A list of sense key codes can be found here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Key_Code_Qualifier

84 is an I/O write error to media - so if your tapes are freezing then you need to find out why

If on Windows look in the application / system event logs for clues - sometimes a write protect will do this and after 3 freezes your drive will go down too

In addition to Event logs, also check media server bptm log.

At last, a chance to advertise my new script ...

You cannot say, with only a few media frozen - you have to watch the tapes and drives over a number of errors, and try to judge patterns and come to some conclusion.

I do NOT recommend cleaning a drive, just because a couple of media got frozen, this would be one of the last things I would try, because cleaning drves very simply, wears them out - the cleaning tapes are abrasive

Tape can ecome frozen if the number of errors passes the threashold (x3 in 12 hours I think by default), but some types of issues, would make a tape freeze instantly - for example, if they are detected as read only.

Anyhow, back to the script, you take the errors file and run it through the script, all explained, but (sorry), it only runs on solaris - you can copy the errors file across to a solaris box if necessary (you take the errors file off the media serevrs).  If you run this on a non master server, you will have to use the -n option (again, it is all explained in the link).

Martin
