Are Cold Catalog Backups still necessary? (NBU 6.0 MP6)

It seems that people vary on this answer. I am having problems with my cold catalog backups (hot ones running fine), and am wondering if these are still necessary?  I heard that symantec was going to eventually phase these out. Thanks!!-Laurie
