CLIENT_NAME = <name> - this specifies your client name - simple

REQUIRED_INTERFACE = unix23

This forces ALL netbackup traffic through the IP address that resolves to unix23 - simples.

Yep, that's REQUIRED_INTERFACE:

REQUIRED_INTERFACE bp.conf entry for UNIX servers and clients
 http://symantec.com/docs/HOWTO33232

And this is CLIENT_NAME:

CLIENT_NAME bp.conf entry
 http://symantec.com/docs/HOWTO33314

They sure are different!

You know what's ALSO different? EVERY OTHER bp.conf ENTRY.

bp.conf options for UNIX clients
 http://symantec.com/docs/HOWTO33173

So do you have a more useful question or did you just need to earn a point today?

A very popular use of this was to perform alternate restores of databases. After being backed up using the DB agent change the required_interface value.

Used to use this to refresh SAP landscapes back in the day.

And still is referenced in Oracle forums.

See for example here.

That's a pretty old technote. PREFERRED_NETWORK replaces the REQUIRED_INTERFACE entry.

See How NetBackup uses the directives to determine which network to use in the Admin Guide

thanks ALL.

I have 2 nic on my client.unix23 and unix23-bu.

in bp.conf file, i have client_name = unix23-bu

and required_interface = unix23-bu.

I guess both are doing the same.

in your case... yes. because unix23-bu is in both entries.

client_name = unix23-bu

and required_interface = unix23.

Does above makes any sense Nagalla?

Read the T/N provided by Chirs(see above post)... let us know what you understood from there...

The REQUIRED_INTERFACE entry specifies the network interface for NetBackup to use when it initiates new connections. These connections can be to another NetBackup client or server for user backups, database agent backups, and user restores.

The CLIENT_NAME entry specifies the name of the client as it is known to NetBackup

in policy i have mentioned unix23-b

And in bp.conf:

client_name = unix23-bu

and required_interface = unix23

I guess no use of this parameter.
