copy old tape to new tape

Has anyone found a good way to copy an old tape to a new tape and still have the netbackup catalog become aware of the new tape? We have several old tapes that we would like to rotate onto new media.

NetBackup has a duplication ability built into the software. However, please understand that NetBackup duplicates images NOT tapes. You will need to determine the name of the images on the tape and then duplicate them until you have done all of the images on the tape. This can be done via the GUI or by the command line using bpimagelist and bpduplicate.Message was edited by:

You can use the bpduplicate command with -id as the option and that will take care of duplication of the volume. Even this will only duplicate the images on that volume.

To add more to the confusion we are using Vault and would like to "copy" the second copy. We simply want to move the data to a new tape.

Bpduplicate has a -id switch that you can use that gives the Media Id. From the Netbackup 5.0 Commands Guide:

-id media_id
Search the image catalog for backups to duplicate that are on this media ID. If the original is fragmented between different media IDs, NetBackup duplicates only the backups that exist on the specified media ID. Backups that span media are duplicated, but not any other backups on the
spanned media ID.

A few things:
- You need to make sure that in your master server properties, you have increased the number of copies that you can make for any image
- You will need a special Vault policy to do this data migration
- Expire the image copy that you do not need.
