we have a drive which is shared between a master server and media server.Drive is showing down when i run from media server and is up when from master server.
What could be the cause?
Is it Media server/master that makes the drive down?

as i and martin have said, and to clarify - DOWN is a status in NetBackup and therefore just a NetBackup term / status - the drive itself is just a piece of hardware
ltid on the media server downs the drive due to some error detected through its firmware - on windows you will see this written to the application event log says drive downed by operator EMM (all via ltid)

Each path can be put down
If the media server encountered 3 write errors on that drive then that path could be put down
Also, if the media server has lost connection with the drive it could be put down
You need to examine your media logs to establish the cause but it is quite normal in a SSO configuration for a shared drive to be down on one server but not another - especially if for example a fibre cable has failed and one server has lost its path to the device
#edit# it is EMM that downs a drive - based on its errors or lack of control path

Adding onto Marks answer.
EMM is involved, but the actual process that downs a drive is ltid. Therefore, it is the media server that actually downs the drive.

so drive actually does not get down on its own,Its media server which downs the drive when bad media, cleaning is required?

so its ltid on media server which downs the drive in every case?

It can be downed manually too, but if no human interaction has been used to down the drive, then yes. ltid will down the drive. There is a reason why it downs drives, to protect tapes from being used and damaged, thus preventing data loss, therefore another drive will be used (if you have available drives of course).
