What "part" of the backup is it failing on? (e.g. specific drive, shadow copy components)

Can you create new policy with same configuration as old and test new policy for testing perpose ?

What is the backup selection you're using for this backup?

If it's ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES, try breaking it down to different drives + shadow copy component.

It is most likely the shadow copy component part failing.. take a look at http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH56576

You will be able to track down by breaking the backup selection like c: d: or in job detailed status it will show you where you are getting the 71error code , set verbose log to 5 to track down completly.

We are using % media servers  and its all from Sun Solaris : 8, 10 , and cleint is windows client .windows 2003 with NB as 6.5

Please post your policy config. (Your full and incr schedules are in the SAME policy, right?) On master, run: bppllist <policy-name> -U

Also create bpbkar and bpfis log folders on the client for further troubleshooting.

Are you using DFSR?

Does the snapshot creation take a long time?

DFSR = Distributed File System Replication. You find that out by talking to the server owner.

Please help us to help you by providing as much info as possible.

At least 3 of us asked for info about the backup selection for this client. Giving us policy config is a good start: On master, run: bppllist <policy-name> -U

Please create bpbkar and bpfis log folders on the client for further troubleshooting.

This is what I see in the policy:

Total of 5 clients backed up.

Mult. Data Streams: yes
Include: ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES

More questions:

Is only one client failing with 71?

Are ALL streams failing or just certain ones?

Do you have the logs on the client as suggested above?
Please post bpbkar and bpfis logs as attachments.

From bpfis log:

"Preparing freeze of X:\ using snapshot method VSP"

"snapshot creation failed, status 156"

PLEASE change snapshot method for all W2003 and W2008 clients to VSS. VSP is the default and is simply 'bad news'.

On the master server, go to Host Properties - Master Server -> Client Attributes.
If the Windows clients are not showing up in the list, manually add them and then select VSS in the Windows Open File tab for each client.

Please verify in bpfis log on client which snapshot method is now in use and if the snapshot was successful.

You probably need to restart NBU on the master server since that is where the client snapshot method is stored.

Check Windows Application and System logs on the client.
