excluding C:\

Hi all,

I'd appreciate if you can help

I want to exclude the C:\ drive in a policy that has ALL_LoCAL_DRIVE directive.

They are all window clients.

I have tried using the backup, restore and archive interface to do the exclusion to no avail and I have even tried the Window client property in the Host property.

what is the way forward?

regards

Interesting. Are you trying to do the exclude list from the master server?
Please see this technote:

NetBackup Policies are not available for selection from the Client Host Properties > Windows Client > Exclude Lists screen when 'Add' is selected from the 'Exclude list:' or the 'Exceptions to the exclude list' pane on the right
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/274144.htm

It has step-by-step instructions and pictures

Hi Bob,

Thanks.

The steps in the technote was I first did before seeking for any other idea but it did not work.

I know on the unix client, you copy the exclude list file to :
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin. I am not sure if this will work. I would have tried this but I don't have access to these boxes. (thats the situation here).

But if it will work then i will need to speak to the system owners.

Kindly give me a lead.

The GUI is the only way I know of adding files to the exclude_list on a windows client. If you have the proper permissions, it should work. If you are following exactly as described in the technote, then I guess it is a permissions problem. Or perhaps a firewall issue.

Have a person with local or network admin rights attempt this exclusion.

the clients are behind a firewall.

Permission issue? well I am not sure.

the scenario is this:

I am the netbackup admin with a unix master and 6 window media servers and many clients.
I don't have login ID to the clients, but I have for the master and media servers, so anything I do is from the master or any of the media servers.

Is it something the system owners can do from their own end?
OR
Do I need to have a login details on these clients before the steps outlined by symantec will work?

OK...sounds like you will not be able to do it from the master server with the existing firewall rules. What I would do then is start up a Remote Admin Console (RAC) on the media server that services the clients. You should be able to alter the exclude list from the client's properties available through the RAC.

If I get you right.

On the media server, I should do RAC to each of the clients, launch netbackup and do the exclusion from the client property.

No.
On the media server start RAC
On the media server go to
-> NetBackup Management
-->Host Properties
--->Clients

Then, still on the media server, select the client on the right side panel. It will become highlighted.
then select the pull down menu "Actions" located along the top of the RAC on the media server.
and click on "Properties"

This will bring up the client's "properties window on the media server's RAC

Expand "Windows Client" and select "Exclude Lists"
Then click on the "Add" button which will bring up another window "Add to exclude list"
Under "Policy" click the down arrow and select <>
In the "Files/Directories" enter C:\
Then click add. Then click close.
You should now see C:\ in the exclude list.

Hi,

From NB 5.1 onwards the way include-exclude are handled is changed.

Include overrides the exlucude i.e
IN the hosts property's Exclude List GIve C:\
This will exclude your C drive from the backup
Suppose you want to Add
C:\winnt
then In the Exception to the exclusion list provide C:\winnt then winnt will be backed up.

Enable logging level to 5 to debug if still this doesn't solve ur C drive eclusion issue.
Check the bpbkar log for any hints.

Firewall has nohing to do with backup of your C drive.

Are you backups happening on those systems that are behind a firewall?
If yes then forget Firewall.
Concentrate on permissions as Bob adviced.
mostly Run the Netbackup CLient service by the credentials of the Domain Admin.
