hard errors

Hi All,

Can someone update me on the below error,

slbk20: iostat -En |grep rmt
rmt/0 Soft Errors: 0 Hard Errors: 0 Transport Errors: 0
rmt/1 Soft Errors: 0 Hard Errors: 4 Transport Errors: 0


Checking the /var/adm/messages on the Solaris SunOS slbk20 5.10 Generic_127111-11 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-V240 machine, the message was as below,

You got 4 write failure on rmt/1.

Soft errors are read or write errors the tape drive have corrected on the fly. Most modern tape drives have 1 write head but two read heads, and therefor able to do read after write on the fly . Hard errors are errors the tape drive can't correct (bad tape,  worn out tape drive, dirty R/W head or dust).

Hard write errors in Netbackup is status 84, read errors 85

SCSI Sense keys are to certain degree unique from device to device - But you can read more about sense keys in  this wikipedia article:

Key Code Qualifier

PS: pls note 1 write failure in Netbackup may show up as multiple errors in syslog because of Netbackup resume logic.
