how do i change expiry of data on media?

manatee

this is a continuation of my other post in https://www.veritas.com/community/forums/how-do-i-bpexpdate-bunch-images

now that the disk images have been duplicated to tape using an SLP with expiration of one week, i want to change the expiration date to one year.

i tried this command but there is a (null) so i didn't proceed:

[root@bin]# bpexpdate -m ABP410 -d 02/28/2017 23:59:59 -host db2
Are you SURE you want to change (null)
to expire on Tue 28 Feb 2017 11:59:59 PM AS y/n (n)?

is that normal? should i proceed and answer "y"?

Your command was fine and as you will have done by now you just asnwer "Y"

You can only change an data expiry date from the CLI

If you change the tape expiry date in the GUI then it does not affect the data on the tape, just the tape itself .. meaning that after the date you set in the GUI NetBackup will not use that tape again and consider it as scrap.

So if you changed the date in the GUI please change it back to "never"

In the media section of the GUI you can see this as Volume Expiration (if you select to show that column) and it should be blank

there seems to be a sync issue between the NBU gui console and the NBU cli as it took my last command and when checked in the GUI, data expiration column of media, the expiration have been reset to 2017.

Always go with CLI.

yup the "Volume Expiration" column is blank for the affected media. maybe i should upgrade from 7.6.0.3 to see if this anomaly is fixed.

Careful with 'Volume Expiration'.

This is not the same as Image Expiration.

Volume Expiration is a hardware expiration date. The default is 0 (never).

Only add Volume Expiration date when the media is faulty or if you think the media is too old and should not be used for any more backups.

You will clearly see the 2 separate fields with this command for one of the tapes:

nbemmcmd -listmedia -mediaid <media-id>

nbemmcmd -listmedia -mediaid ABP410

That looks fine:

Volume Expiration:              -

No date for that so all is good
