For a typical backup you would want to see the bptm and bpbrm logs from the media server and the bpbkar log from the client. You MUST create these sub folders / directories first under:

\program files\veritas\netbackup\  (for windows)

/usr/openv/netbackup/logs/   (for UNIX)

A great forum post here about it:

There are two set of logs in Netbackup - the classic and unified logs

The classic logs can be read by notepad/wordpad in windows.

The unified logs can be read using the vxlogview command.

In general reading debug logs is some strange sort of art - a lot of messages are indicating errors without being so. Especially the unified are notorious difficult to read from a end user point of view. For the classic log look for the [?] at the start of line - its the severity

Severity:
1 = Unknown
2 = Debug
4 = Info
8 = Warning
16 = Error
32 = Critical

My 2c:

If you want to know which logs to create or look at on which server or client, you need to understand the backup and restore process flow diagram. Have a look at Appendix A of the Troubleshooting Guide for your NBU version (see Handy NBU Links in my signature where you can find links to all NBU documentation).

To know what to look for in legacy logs (e.g. bpbrm log), see my reply in this discussion:
