Hello,

i didn't find any solution on forums

i would like to open top by sharing of tape drives between 2 media servers

i understand that reservation conflict is normal behaviour, few times per day or one daily we have error 18 or Control daemon connect or protocol error

on SAN switch is set failover for tape drives

media servers are RedHat with newest kernel and nbu is 7.5.0.7

the tape drives are never down and are working properly

have anybody suggestion?

multipath to robotic path is ok

i re-added SSO license and rebooted media servers - because it was added and configured shared tape drives without reboot of media servers

now we dont see any problems

Something very wrong with your config. If SSO is setup properly you shouldn't see reservation conflicts. 1st thing to check is that persistent binding at hba level is done on all media servers. This will prevent device name change when server is rebooted. 2nd is to confirm that SSO license is added to all media servers along with drive and server licenses. If all of the above is in place, delete all tape drives currently configured on all media servers and start again. Use the Device config wizard to select all media servers and config devices simultaneously. The master server will coordinate device allocation and prevent reservation conflicts.

I don't see NBU server license or Library based tape drive licenses in your output.

When you see these reservation conflicts, check NBU 'nbrbutil -dump' output as well vmdareq output on the master.

Device allocation from the master server (EMM) in SSO environment is explained in NBU Admin Guide II:  http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC5158
Chapter 3: About Shared Storage Option configuration

Looking at the licensing guide, it looks you are mising the "NetBackup Library Based Tape Drive" license, of which you would require one per tape drive in tape libraries.

Having same model HBA but different firmware revisions is probably not a great situation to be in - but maybe you are restricted by O/S version differences, which restricts HBA driver versions, which restricts HBA firmware versions.

New questions:

8) What are the HBA driver versions?

9) What are the RHEL versions?

ok - thanks for the detail - it all really does help set the facts.

This interests me, where you said:

"on SAN switch is set failover for tape drives"

10) Can you explain some more around this feature/config/capability?

11) And, can you post output from:

/usr/openv/netbackup/volmgr/bin/scan -changer

/usr/openv/netbackup/volmgr/bin/scan -tape

...from both servers?

12) And you previously also said:

"the tape drives are never down and are working properly"

...so there is no functional/availability/efficiency/performance problem?  And this question/post/task is more about finding out and understanding why you get those messages?

13) And can you confirm that these are seen in /var/log/messages?  Or elsewhere, if so, where were they seen?

Marcelko

10)

sorry, it's not failover, but autonegotiation set on SAN switch - as it's default setting for shared tape drives

12) yes, tape drives are up and working properly

only one per week i see Error 52 - timed out waiting for media manager to mount volume

13) yes, they are seen in /var/log/massages and i didn't see them somewhere else

Ok - tape drive serialization looks good.

I'm sorry to say this after all this investigation, but if they all seem to be working ok - then I guess what we need is for some other users/customers to confirm whether they also see the same messages - and whether they simply ignore them, as in... that's just the way it is.  However, I can see where you are coming from in trying to ensure that there isn't something nasty behind such messages.

And, I'm sorry, and you'll have to excuse my ignorance on this... but I still don't understand this:

"but autonegotiation set on SAN switch - as it's default setting for shared tape drives"

14) Are you refering to FC speed autonegotiation?  If so, IMO, I thought best practice was to hard set the speed of SAN ports for tape, and not to leave it to negotiate.

15) If you are referring to something else, can you supply a link/URL to something that describes it in more detail?

On an RHEL 6.4 NetBackup v7.6.0.1 system that I have access to, the HP branded FC attached LTO6 tapes that my scan shows up are listed as 'NetBackup Drive Type: 16' - so I'm wondering whether IBM LTO5 tape drives (or even all LTO5 tape drives) show up as 'NetBackup Drive Type: 10'.   I don't think this is an issue.

16) You say you are on NetBackup v7.5.0.7 - can you take a look at this:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH55064

...and confirm which version of mappings you currently have installed?

Thanks.

Just noticed that the "changer" is listed twice by each node.

I didn't think that NetBackup "natively" supported multi-path to either robot-control or to tape drives.  But please do correct me.

I've heard that it can be done, out of sight of NetBackup, i.e. using tape library vendor features - but I didn't think that NetBackup understands multi-pathing.  I've personally used a FC module on three cab ADIC Scalar i6000 to hide the multi-pathing from NetBackup so that, via software based configuration within the tape library, it was possible to switch either or both of robot-control and/or tape drive target LUNs to different initiators from fabric A to fabric B or vice-versa, but NetBackup itself never saw the multiple paths.

Anyone else have any experience of multi-pathing robot control which is visible to NetBackup ?

we've been using multipathing in linux and tape libraries for quite some time, no problems.

NetBackup recognizes all paths to tape drives, and only one path at a time to robotics (user selectable).

@Will - cool.  Tape library model?  I'd like to read up on it.  Do you think that your implementation is significantly different to Marcelko's?  Any suggestions?  And, more importantly for Macelko, do you see any similar kind of messages in your system messages logs?

You say 'user selectable' for robotic path... where does that 'selection' take place?

Thanks.

We have various Quantum libraries, mainly i500.  Ocassionally see 'reservation conflict' but never the Status 18.

The selection can be seen under Media & Device Management > Devices > Robots > Change > Browse

And, finally, found this old post with Status 18

http://www.backupcentral.com/phpBB2/two-way-mirrors-of-external-mailing-lists-3/symantec-netbackup-18/linux-media-server-tape-drive-issues-58985/

I gave in and called support. We shutdown NetBackup and
the servers. Went and shut down our ADIC. Brought it back up, restarted
servers and NBU. All back. While the Windows box didn't have any issues
with the ADIC with regard to the tape drives, the Linux box evidently had
some reservations that didn't get removed with the ADIC on the power down
when power failed. I still don't know if the ADIC lost power, but I'm
guessing it didn't, resulting in the problems.

Thanks Will.

This leads me to want to check for. and release any leftover SCSI reservations...

....so maybe something along the lines of:

1)    Wait for a time when NetBackup is quiet.

2)    Check that no backup jobs are running:
$ bpdbjobs -summary

3)    Check all brokered resources have been released:
$ nbrbutil -dump

4)    Scan for all required tape drives:                (N.B. This may take several minutes)
$ scan -tape | grep -i "Device Name" | sort | wc -l

5)    Scan for all required robot changers:                (N.B. This may take several minutes)
$ scan –changer | grep –i "Device Name" | sort | wc -l

6)    Check that all NetBackup servers are “AVAILABLE”:        (N.B. This may take several minutes)
$ vmdareq -hostinfo

7)    Check that all SSO tape drives are “AVAILABLE”:
$ vmdareq -driveinfo

8)    Check all SSO tape drives have been freed, i.e. no mounted media:
$ vmoprcmd -d ds

9)    Check that no tape drives (VTL + SSO) are “active”, i.e. all are TLD and not ACTIVE:
$ vmoprcmd -devmon | egrep "/dev|{" | sort | egrep -v " TLD| SCAN-TLD"

10)    Check that all drive paths are visible across NetBackup:
$ vmoprcmd -devmon | egrep "/dev|{" | sort | wc –l

11)    Confirm that the device manager database matches the visible devices:
$ tpautoconf -report_disc

12)    Check that no backup jobs are running:
$ bpdbjobs -summary

13)    Check all brokered resources have been released:
$ nbrbutil -dump

14)    For every drive, issue a SCSI release:
$ vmoprcmd –crawlreleasebyname DRIVE-NAME                (to release SCSI reservations)

N.B. This last command will reveal any left over SCSI reservations because it will release them.  It is very important to not run a 'release' whilst NetBackup is actively using tape drives.  Try something like the above commands above on both media servers.
