Need some info on Netbackup logs

What are the logs that consumes most of Netbackup server processing power? That I should be careful when I turned them on

What is the maximum and minimum verbose level settings? what is the optimal level of verbose setting?

Can netbackup archive those logs automatically at periodic intervals?

What are the logs that consumes most of Netbackup server processing power? That I should be careful when I turned them on.

The only one I can think of is nbrb, where the DebugLevel should not be set higher than 4, unless we specifically request it.  >4 can cause issues on busy machines.  On non-busy machines, I've never seen an issue.

Any log that is 'busy' (bpdbm/ emm /jm/ rb ) can cause load issues/ disk space issues but this would really only be an issue if the machine was almost on it's kness and suffereing servere performance issues.

Unified/ VX logs levels(eg. nbemm)  (DebugLevel and DiagnosticLevel)  0 - 6

Legacy logs (eg bptm)  0 - 5

PBX = 1 - 10  (default is 10, leave it alone ... ;0)  )

Just to confuse things, Isome process can also log at VERBOSE = 99 (I think bpbkar and bpfis are two that do), don;t worry about this unless reqiested by support.

Optimal, well that depends who you ask, ask me and I'll say highest (apart from nbrb) ...  Ask Marianne, and she'll probably say something else ....

Can netbackup archive those logs automatically at periodic intervals?

No, it can be set to delete, but not archive.

I have in the past used custom bp_start _notify scripts to archive logs.

Do you work with somesh_p?  Your post is an exact cut-n-paste of this earlier thread:

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/netbackup-logs

In fact, this appears to be the second time you've done this today:

yes. I work with somesh_p. somehow, he couldn't post his content into forum. it was shown as unpublished post. so, I posted with my id

Defult is zero I do believe, for legacy logs ...

If you set VERBOSE = -2 (hope I remember that correctly) it turns them off, of delete the dir (when whatever process the dir is for is not running, else the log will disappear but the disk space won't be released).

Default levels (Debug/ Diag) for vx logs are 1 and 6 for Netbackup.

For netbackup on an appliance, the defaults are 5 and 6 (Debug 5/ Diag 6) - which is why it has a large logs partition ...

Default retention of logs is 28 days, set in th clean up section of master server host properties.

Martins Top Tip of the day.

If you log a call and we request vx / unified logs, do not run vxlogview, but send the raw logs.

Martins Second Top Tip of the day

If you send multiple unified logs (eg. bptm/ bpbrm) they all have the same name log.<date>

Please be kind and rename them, eg. bptm.log.<date> and if there are off different machines add the server name as well.  Sometimes we just get a load of logs thown at us, with no explanation, it can take a very long time to work out where they are from and organise them - then we get complaints about no updates ...

womble.bptm.log.<date>

firebug.bptm.log.<date>

Martins 3rd Top tip of the day

Do not rename vx/ unified logs, just organise by putting them in a dir of the machine name they are from. If they are renamed, it stops vxlogview working when we run it.
