'media manager received no data for backup image' backing up USB drive

SteveLaw
Level 5

We have a Windows 2008 R2 server setup as a media server that backs up smaller clients. The server has a 2tb USB drive attached that contains all our installation software and appears as a local F: drive. Although I can browse the contents of F: in the backup policy 'Backup Selections' all attempts to backup data from the drive fail. Other ordinary local drives backup fine.

How can I make this work? We need a weekly backup of this data. The target server is running Netbackup 7.5.0.6, the master is at 7.6.1.2. But this still didn't work back when everything was at 7.5.0.6.

Thanks

Hi Steve - looks ok to me.  Did you get a chance to try another backup?  Of:     F:\*

There are no exclusions set on the Netbackup client for this.
Attached is a debug level 3 bpbkar log for a failed backup I just ran, hope it helps.

Aha it works if I check "Backup Network Drives", set the Netbackup client to run under local admin account rather than system and enter the unc path "\\deploy01\f$" (which is a 'local' unc path) in backup selections!

Is that the only way to do this? Why doesn't Netbackup like local USB drives?

My guess is that a USB drive is seen as a removable drives and therefor no seen as a candidate for ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES.

Try running bpmount on the server. bpmount will return if a drive is consider local nor not.

Hi Nicolai,

BPMOUNT on the server returns this:

C:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\bin>bpmount
local: Shadow Copy Components:\ on Shadow Copy Components:\
CDROM: A:\ on A:\
local: C:\ on C:\
CDROM: D:\ on D:\
local: E:\ on E:\
local: F:\ on F:\
CDROM: H:\ on H:\
EXIT STATUS 0: the requested operation was successfully completed

F: is the USB drive, so Netbackup does seem to think it is local.

Strange - I will call a friend who maybe can help. I am a Linux guy, so my Windows knowledge is limited.

I may have missed it, but what file system is on F:, is it NTFS or FAT32 or ExFAT. I think only NTFS is supported.

Good thought - but F: just shows as NTFS in disk manager, like the other local disks.

FYI - there is a difference between USB disks and USB sticks.  They report themselves differently to Windows.  But before we get in to that.

I've just tested using:

Windows 2008 R2 Standard (as a VM in VMware Fusion), with NetBackup Enterprise Server v7.6.1.2 as a Master/Media/Client, and:

i) A backup of a generic USB stick as FAT32 and again as ExFAT both failed with status 90.

ii) A Backup of a USB disk (actually a Transcend JetDrive - containing a 128 GB SSD module) - formatted as two NTFS partitions - a backup from both partitions worked ok.

.

Here's the details on one of the partitions on the USB disk that I was able to backup from:

C:\Users\Administrator>fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo L:
NTFS Volume Serial Number : 0x229e3eb89e3e83f7
Version : 3.1
Number Sectors : 0x0000000007478fff

Mft Zone End : 0x00000000000a1140
RM Identifier: C4C4DA04-2689-11E6-BE6F-8434977E240D

.

Some questions, and things to check on the host which has the F: USB disk mounted:

1) What does this show:

fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo F:

2) What does this show:

C:\> diskpart
DISKPART> list disk
DISKPART> select disk N
DISKPART> detail disk
DISKPART> list partition
DISKPART> select partition 1
DISKPART> detail partition
DISKPART> select volume N
DISKPART> detail volume
DISKPART> filesystems
DISKPART> exit

.

FYI on my test VM, my USB disk shows as GPT formatted (and not MBR formatted), which is indicated by the right hand '*' (under the Gpt column) below in my "list disk" command:

DISKPART> list disk
Disk ### Status Size Free Dyn Gpt

I've managed for format the generic 8GB USB "stick" as NTFS using Paragon NTFS for Mac, and the results are:

i) USB "stick" 8GB as MBR (not GPT) with FAT32 - backup of U:\ failed status 90.

ii) USB "stick" 8GB as MBR (not GPT) with ExFAT - backup of U:\ failed status 90.

iii) USB "stick" 8GB as MBR (not GPT) with NTFS - backup of U:\ failed status 90.

iv) USB "stick" 8GB as MBR (not GPT) with NTFS - backup of U:\random worked.

i.e. the difference between backup iii) and backup iv) was that backup iii) was a backup of a plain volume entry of "U:\" which failed with status 90, whereas backup iv) was of a folder path "U:\random" which worked ok.

So, then I tested again using the USB "disk" which was GPT partitioned, and the backups were:

v) USB "disk" 128GB as GPT (not MBR) with NTFS - backup of "M:\random" worked ok.

vi) USB "disk" 128GB as GPT (not MBR) with NTFS - backup of "M:\" whole drive, worked ok.

.

So, my guess is that maybe your combination of "server hardware" + "operating system" + "hardware drivers" + "USB disk/stick technology" + "format structure (MBR vs GPT)" + "file system" is not allowing the "whole drive" to be specified as a backup selection.

Here's my suggestion.  Try to backup a folder path, if that works, then you have a work-around of sorts.  If a backup of "F:\somepath" still does not work for you, or is unacceptable to you, then we may have to dig a bit deeper.

As a final test, I went back to the USB generic 8GB stick as MBR with NTFS, and tried a backup of "U:\*" and this worked ok.

So, maybe you could try a backup of:  F:\*

And, as we all know, a backup is no good if we cannot restore, so I also tried a restore back to the 8GB MBR/NTFS "stick" and this worked ok:

U:\random>dir
Volume in drive U is USB
Volume Serial Number is 581A-C7C1

Hi Steve - looks ok to me.  Did you get a chance to try another backup?  Of:     F:\*

Hi sdo,

F:\* just backs up the root of the F: drive and ignores the f:\support folder with all the data in it.

I do have a solution though as per an earlier post, trial & error shows that if I check "Backup Network Drives", set the Netbackup client to run under local admin account rather than system and enter the unc path "\\deploy01\f$". So I'll just do that - I only need irregular backups of this folder anyway.

Thanks for your help elucidating how Netbackup deals with USB drives though!
