netbackup client OpenVMS file locking issue

sm2
Level 1

We are running into an issue with file locking while backing up data on openvms v8.4-2 systems. Files which are being backed up by netbackup are locked by the bpcd process (during the duration of the backup of that file). So during that duration applications cannot access that file. Has anyone else seen this issue and have a workaround ? The OpenVMS netbackup client is version 7.5 -- it is the latest version supported on OpenVMS.

Netbackup uses operating system for reading files, if a files is locked, it is likely caused by OpenVMS.

Same scenario with Windows and locked files. Fist came VSP and the switching to Windows VSS for open file backup.

I saw OpenVms and couldn’t resist myself from sharing this information which you should be aware of during NetBackup upgrade.

NetBackup 8.1 onwards do not support OpenVms client backup and restore. Only workaround is to keep media server at NetBackup 8.0 or earlier release for OpenVms backup and restore. This is because OpenVms clients use BPCD for communication and NetBackup 8.1 uses PBX, also client connect options are deprecated.
