Hi ALL,

I am very new to this Netbackup tool.Currently i have been sent on a training for thi tool for a month.I am also reading the manuals and foruums of netbackups. How ever I have few doubts,If any body has time to clarify them.

1. If I stop BPRD..Scheduled and manual backups all will be stopped?Yes or no.

2.Media server will be only visible in host properties when devices have been attached to them?not by after nbemmcmd -addhost command?

3. VSS is used in vmware backup policy type to freeze the snapshot?

4.media  from drive needs to be returned to the same slot from which it came ?

5  if some other tapes on that slot then library drive will be down?

6.Can i add a client with ip address?if yes then there must not be name resolution requirement?

Why don't you try it, because that is the only way to be sure ... I thought, with bprd stopped that scheduled jobs would still run off the top of my head. Now, I've just looked in the thread Marianne posted and I see that I wrote most of it. nbpemreq -suspend_scheduling: No scheduled jobs No manual jobs, restores, etc. bprdreq -terminate: Scheduled jobs still run No manual jobs, restores, etc. Now from one of the links I found in the above posts I see that I actually ran a test "I stopped bprd and made sure the scheduled backup ran. It did, and completed successfully. With bprd running a few lines are put in the bprd log, but for the basic disk type backup I ran, clearly they aren't that important as the backup still completed." So I think we can conclude that the answers from this post - bprd will stop manual backups but not scheduled backups. These are very advanced questions for someone who hasn't used NBU, I would recommend before asking questions such as these you read the following post: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/netbackup-basics-and-how-make-your-life-easier ... and ensure that you understand and are able t do everything in it that I have listed, as the contents of the post are all the basics that any NBU admin should be able to complete and understand without asking for help, and I would say that the vast majority of people I talk with are unable to complete these basic steps.

yes

2.Media server will be only visible in host properties when devices have been attached to them?not by after nbemmcmd -addhost command?
No, it will visialbe if the master server bp.conf have the entiry of the media server as SERVER =  or MEDIA_SERVER =

3. VSS is used in vmware backup policy type to freeze the snapshot?
VSS also be used for Regular windows backups  and the Snapshot backups too

4.media  from drive needs to be returned to the same slot from which it came ?
yes, it is

5  if some other tapes on that slot then library drive will be down?

No, it can not be the case unless manually do this, and in this case Robot inventory needs to done in netbackup to update the latest media /slot info, if not netbackup will freeze the tapes.

6.Can i add a client with ip address?if yes then there must not be name resolution requirement?
yes, client can add with IP address also, and no Name resolution  required.

I find it strange that you have the same type of questions as NIKHILL, Andy2345, nike_new, noazara, etc...

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/bprd-terminate

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/media-server-1

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/slot

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/media-issue

All of these users have also asked LOTS of snapshot/VSS questions in this forum - just use the Search facility above.

If you really need to understand VMware backups, read through NBU for VMware Admin Guide   http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC3663

About your last question - using IP addresses as Client names can be done, but never a good idea. The admin on that client will probably ask you:
Please restore file xyz that was backed up last month on client abc....

2. nbemcmd should not be needed to add a media server, if it does not 'auto add' then something is wrong with the config, and adding it manually will not make it work. 6. No machines should ever be added by their IP address, it's unsupported and amongst other things 'breaks' the nbcc catalog consistency check.

My point exactly. These are NOT the questions of a beginner. Why would you want to stop bprd? And why bprd? Why not another process? And why only one process? I would expect a beginner to ask how to stop and restart NBU. Same with rest of questions - not beginner's questions. ... Strangely most of these questions have been asked by the users that I've mentioned above. Or NOT so strange??

And so this thread gets closed/solved without my questions getting answered...... Why am I not surprised?
