snippet from above:
The oprd process has evolved over the years to become a messenger/network interface for the ltid process. oprd is started by vmd and can be either short-lived or long-lasting. Many times, oprd is only present until it completes its transaction for ltid which usually takes seconds. The exceptions to this are connections from a remote administration console. Connections from a remote administration console will open an oprd process which remains open until the remote administration console is properly exited. If the remote administration console is not exited, meaning the user just disconnected from the network instead of exiting, then an oprd will remain on the media server and must be manually killed.
