Hi,
We are facing issue with a media server.
Many jobs running on various client servers for that media server are failing with error :
01/13/2013 19:51:27 - Error bpbrm (pid=5551) bpcd on client exited with status 23: socket read failed
01/13/2013 19:51:28 - Error bpbrm (pid=5551) cannot send mail because BPCD on client exited with status 23: socket read failed
01/13/2013 19:51:29 - end writing
socket read failed (23)
We checked and found :
bptestbpcd -client client name Command is working when we try it from master for media server but not for client
Again , when we try vmoprcmd,
vmoprcmd -d -h (media server)
The Media Manager device daemon (ltid) is not active on host (media server).
Again,for media server :
netstat -a |grep bp
*.bpcd *.* 0 0 49152 0 LISTEN
*.bpjava-msvc *.* 0 0 49152 0 LISTEN
30054418cd8 stream-ord 300211cf480 00000000 /usr/openv/var/vnetd/bpcompatd.uds
When we try bpclntcmd from media server for client, we get :
bpclntcmd -hn client
host cleint: client at 199.37.184.185 (0xc725b8b9)
aliases:
From master for media:
master: bpclntcmd -hn media
host media: media at 135.153.168.80
aliases: media 135.153.168.80
From media for master :
bpclntcmd -hn master
host master: master at 135.53.28.54 (0x87351c36)
host master: master at 135.53.28.53 (0x87351c35)

what are the host names for these IP address
135.153.168.80
135.153.168.81
does your client able to resolve these IP address?
check below commands in client.
bpclntcmd -ip 135.153.168.80
bpclntcmd -ip 135.153.168.81
01-13-2013 09:18 PM
bpclntcmd -hn master returns 2 different IP address? Which is the correct one?
Check bp.conf of media to make sure EMMSERVER entry is correct and match with master server (if they're the same host).
Make sure your media server is working and not having problem when you run this from master server:
nbemmcmd -listhosts -verbose
It will tell you if your media server is reachable or whether active for disk/tape. You may need to restart Netbackup on media server to confirm that.

hi,
your post is showing 2 issues.
1) communication issue with the client
2) litd not active on the media Server.
for communication issue:-
provide from both mastter and media server to client
bptestbpcd -client <clientname> -verbose -debug
failed job detailed status.
for media server issue:- provide the bpps -x from media server
and tpconfig -d
does the media server have the tape Drives configured?

Master to Media is exit with 0 ----> its fine
Media to client exit with 0 --->its fine
Media server dont have any Drives configured.. so litd will not run, ltid runs only when the Devices conigured.-->so this is also fine.
now provide me the bptestbpcd from Master to client and also failed job detail status.

Hi,
Issue is still not fixed, and one more fact is that all the clients that failed on the particluar server have never completed a successful ran. I couldnot get any report of previous run for any of the failed clients.Though some clients backup compled fine on the same media server.
And all the clients that fail have same socket error.
Please advice.

1)what are the failed client Netbackup and OS versions?
2) did you enable the logs of bpcd and bpbrm ?(as i requested above)
3) what is you Client read and connect timeout Values in Media server?
try increasing them and check the backup
4) are you using the Multi-streamin backup? if yes.. how its working without Multi-stream?

Hi,
Version on client :
NetBackup-Solaris10 7.1.0.3 , and master is the same.Rest of the clients are also of same of version below to that of master.
We are not using multi-streams.
CLIENT_CONNECT_TIMEOUT = 300
CLIENT_READ_TIMEOUT = 1800
yes, bpcd logs are as :

what are the host names for these IP address
135.153.168.80
135.153.168.81
does your client able to resolve these IP address?
check below commands in client.
bpclntcmd -ip 135.153.168.80
bpclntcmd -ip 135.153.168.81
01-15-2013 03:52 AM
Check /etc/hosts file on the client.
BPCD ACCEPT FROM 135.153.168.80.65437 TO 135.153.168.81.13724
Connection is received from IP address 135.153.168.80. This should be the media server?
Client is unable to resolve this IP address to a hostname.
bpcd peer_hostname: gethostbyaddr failed : HOST_NOT_FOUND (1)
Please add server's IP 135.153.168.80 with hostname in /etc/hosts on the client.
Ensure that you have hosts entries for master and all media servers listed in bp.conf in client's /etc/hosts.
If you are using DNS in your environment, check that client is configured to use DNS:
Check 'hosts' in /etc/nsswitch.conf
and correct entries in /etc/resolv.conf

Hi all,
Issue resolved..
We asked SA to update the host entry of media server in /etc/host file of all the clients.
Then we ran the backups and it worked fine.
Thanks a ton for all your support..
