Hi there,
This would be my first post.
I have scenario whereby i need to restore my data to new remote site. Basically need simple solution to complete restore by this weekend - super urgent task.
Primary site setup;
Master server = Windows 2008 Server R2
Media Server = IBM AIX 7.1
Tape library = Quantum scalar i80 with (4 units LTO Ulrium5 tape drives)
Veritas Netbackup version = Symantec Netbackup version 7.1
Remote site setup;
Unix server (IBM server)
Tape drives = IBM LTO Ultrium 5
Appreciated feedback & solution from you all.
Thank you in advance.

hi,
you have 2 ways to compleate the restore
1) Import of catalogs
2) with out Import
ofr Import option, you need to find the list of tapes that are having the data , move those tapes to the destination Master server and start the Phase 1 and 2 of Imports and then start restore. its time taking process
see the below T/N for import Porcess
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH43584
for sencond option:-
along with moving the tapes phycisally to the destination , you need to copy the catalogs form source master to desintation master , and then start the restore
its a pretty quick process.
check the below doc for detail info

Hi Nagalla,
Great ! thanks for both solution for me to choose.
I will need to digest and choose what suits me.
Both have pro & con, 1st solution looks easy but time consuming.
2nd solution might not suits me coz I have AIX server at remote site (while at primary site, My master server is Windows). But I have windows server at remote site but not connect to tape drive. Can I setup that windows server as master server without physically connect to tape drive ?
My goal is to restore the data to AIX server at remote site. Data size = 900 GB.
Any luck ?
regards
Imra

yes,
you can setup windows as Master server and use AIX as media server (as its connected with tape drive ) in remote site, and then use second option.
and you can do the restore anywhere you want as a client.

Can I assume that the link between the sites is not enough to duplicate all data across?
If not then the best way (provided that the sites are isolated from each other) would be to have create a Windows Master at the remote site (must have same name and NetBackup installed to same drive letter and location and of same patch level) and then do a catalog restore to it.
If the media server at the remote site also has the same name as the one on the live site then it will make things really easy, otherwise you will need to change ownership of all media once you have done the catalog restore so that you remote site media server can do the restores
Also be careful when setting up the library on the remote site as it will need to read barcode labels in the same way and you will also need to make sure the barcode rules and Media ID Genration rules work the same as the production site so that you do not get any media id conflicts
Good Luck!

HI Nagalla & Mark,
Sorry for late reply as I was busy during weekend. Lucky for me the installation was postpone to this week.
Thank you both for your reply & recommendation, anyway below few things stuck in my mind.
Nagalla,
Yes I would choose 2nd option (after discussion with my team)
Mark,
Yes indeed link was the bottleneck. I will configure master server (Windows) at remote site similar to live site. But currently propose media server at remote site have different name compared to live site (and cannot be change ..So will this affect/complicate my task
Appreciated if you just summarize 'catalog restore' , bullet point will do.
For tape barcode, remote site will be single tape drive (LTO Ultrium5) direct connect to AIX (media) server and using SAS cable. While at live site, tape library connect to SAN switch (fibre connectivity) with 4 units LTO Ultrium tape drive. I hope this will be straight forward things.
Hope this clarifies, thank you in advance.

Hi Nagalla,
Quick one, on page 3 (2nd option=recovery without import), could you elaborate below;
On the recovery site, perform the following steps
7. Merge the copied images into the catalog
Appreciated your reply.
Thanks.
01-15-2013 12:40 AM
hi,
its the keeping the catalogs in destination master , that you copied from source site(from step 5) to the location
/usr/openv/netbackup/db/images/<client name>
01-15-2013 12:43 AM
Simply copy them into correct client folder under ...\netbackup\db\images.

Hi Nagalla & Marianne,
Ooh OK understand the words.
Many THANKS !

If the Master at the remote site has to have a different name then you cannot do a catalog restore so your only options are to do the "recover without import" or to use de-dupe on both sites and then use AIR to replicate your backups across (far easier than trying to do everything with a standalone tape drive!)

Hi Mark,
Sorry for late reply. I have setup Master at remote site similar to live site. But now i have few issues;
1. I got status 46 = server not allowed access. When try to connect to my Media Server (ibm aix) from my Master Server at remote site.
Remote site setup;
Master server = Windows Server 2008R2 Svr
Media Server = IBM AIX V7.1
Tape Drive = IBM 3580 Ultrium5 Tape drive - direct connect to Media Server (SAS connection)
My question, how to add Media Server in Master Server ?
FYI I have add Master Server name in bp.conf file (at media server) and add in Media Server IP address in Master Server hosts file. Ping was OK, vice versa between master & media server. I reckon this could be connection issue. Please assist/advice.
2. Unable to launch jnbSA from Media Server: Basically on issue No X11 DISPLAY variable was set. But I'll try try to resolve this issue by myself, checking on forum etc. But if you have solution for this issue, do let me know ...
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.

how to add Media Server in Master Server ?
Host Properties -> Server -> Additional Servers -> Add
Restart NBU on Master server
Unable to launch jnbSA from Media Server
ALL management/config/restore can be done from GUI on the Windows master.
Why do you need the Java GUI on the media server?

Hi Marianne,
have try & successfully add Media Server but still not appear in Media Server list in host properties.
Even after restart all NBU services & restart master server still Media Server not appear. What possibly could be so complicated. Not to mention catalog restore afterwards. Would appreciated your assist...
Agree with you, will manage from Master Server. Thanks for quick respond.
01-16-2013 09:58 PM
still not appear in Media Server list in host properties.
did you add the Media server info into EMM server, ?
if not use below commnd in master server to add the Media server into EMM
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/nbemmcmd -addhost -machinename <mediaservername> -machinetype media -netbackupversion 6.5.6 -operatingsystem <OS> -masterserver <masterserverName>
what is the status 46 = server not allowed acces, does it resolved?
its a name resolution issue or bp.conf entiries issue in media server
did your media servre bp.conf have the Master server entry and does it able to resolve master name and IP address
.

Already add Master server entry in Media server bp.conf file
Hi Marianne,
License already taking care off in Media server
Problem to run device config media manager due to vmd status 70.

Hi Marianne,
Sorry I have wrongly paste the stop/start netbackup services just now (in my recent post)
