system state backup of Windows 2008 Domain Controller

Hi all,

We are running NetBackup Enterprise Server 6.5.3 on one master server (Windows 2003 Server SP2) and the Windows 2008 Domain Controller we are trying to get the system state backup on is running the 6.5.4 client and is running Windows 2008 Server Standard SP2 64 bit edition.

This domain controller is in its own NetBackup policy that is set to use the "ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES" directive so it will grab the systam state and all of the files on the hard drives. When I run this policy it does grab all the files but I get this error which makes me think the system state is not getting backed up properly.

--------------------------------------------------------------

1/24/2011 4:30:59 PM - positioning 0322L4 to file 99
1/24/2011 4:32:56 PM - Warning bpbrm(pid=3632) from client wcdc: WRN - can't open file: System State:\Automated System Recovery\BCD\BCD (WIN32 536935992: Unknown error)
1/24/2011 4:32:56 PM - Error bpbrm(pid=3632) from client wcdc: ERR - Error encountered while attempting to get additional files for System State:\

1/24/2011 4:32:54 PM - begin writing
1/24/2011 5:32:21 PM - end writing; write time: 00:59:27
the requested operation was partially successful(1)

I can use the wbadmin Dos command to get a successful system state backup so I know it can be done. Do I have to switch this client to use VSS for the open file backups instead of using the VSP from NetBackup?

Thanks

The master is 6.5.3 and the client is at a newer rev of 6.5.4 is an unsupported environment. All media servers and clients cannot be at a higher/newer version of Netbackup master server.

VSS should be used for all clients that are above W2000. Unfortunately you have to set this on all new installations because VSP is used by default if VSS is not set.

Master server must always be the highest revision in any NB environment.

And where possible, use VSS for WOFB - VSP is that good Symantec have now dropped it! ;)

"...Starting with NetBackup 7.0, VSP is no longer supported. That leaves Microsoft’s Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS) as the only choice for an open file backup for Windows clients...."

VSP went away with NBU 7.x and VSS is still very much alive.

Thanks,

Hi all,

Thanks for the feedback, I tried switching over to the VSS option and restarted the NetBackup services but it is still failing with the same error. I decided to submit a trouble ticket with Symantec to see if they can help.

... what about the versions? i.e. client at apparently higher release than the master?

Hi Andy,

I'll end up addressing that eventually, thanks

looks like there is an issue and you may need to go to 6.5.5. to resolve this or apply and EBB

and looks like you're not the first to hit a similar issue:

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/windows-2008-shadowcopy-backup-partially-completes-ne...

Someone else has found a workaround by giving a driver letter to a system partition:

Check you bpbkar logs to see if your matches the above TN and then if you see the tell tale signs and log a case with support to confirm
