The job details you posted show:

9/24/2014 3:15:05 PM - Info bptm(pid=16372) INF - Waiting for mount of media id 0023L5 on server meddrae5 for reading.
9/24/2014 3:15:46 PM - mounted; mount time: 00:00:43
9/24/2014 3:15:46 PM - Error bptm(pid=16372) tapemark or blank tape encountered reading media header, drive index 2

I did a spot of testing so editted my post, the mouting message refers to the physiscal load of the tape (I tested this by importing a tape with no NBU header, I got similar messages).

Looks like it's unix to me (or linux) , I'd load the tape into the drive then run this command :

/usr/openv/volmgr/bin/scsi_command -map -d <drivbe path containing tape>  and print up the output here :

Alternately load the tape into the drive and run:

mt -f <path to tape> rew

dd if=<path to tape> bs=1024 count=1 |od -c

... and print up the output.

Ohhh, good thinking NIcolai, at least one of us is awake ...

Yes, if the header has been encrypted by hardware based encryption, then this will make it unreadable, if the system it is being imported on does not have the ability to decrypt it.

This actually would make a lot of sense, as you really have to try quite hard to over write a backup tape and in doing so leave it with out a NBU media header ... - and in such a state that NBU cannot even identify the type of data on the tape.

In my test, i overwrote a tape with tar  - NBU cannot import this, but did report

24/09/2014 13:58:46 - Error bptm(pid=8998) block read is not a NetBackup or Backup Exec media header, len = 10240, media id TAPE01, drive index 0, data is tar-format

As I said, I got a similar message ot you, not exact as it could ID the data type as tar.

In your case, it can't even manage that so either :

Tape is blank

Tape has been overwritten in some horrible way

Tape is damaged

Or, Nicolais suggestion, it's encrypted.

Sure you have the correct media id?

How do you know that the data is on this tape?

This tape looks to me as if it is new.
Or one of the other reasons mentioned by Martin and Nicolai....

Hi Nicolai and Martin,

Yes we are using SKM Quantum Encryption , so what is solution now please suggest .

Thank You !!

Nice one Nicolai ...

You need to speak with the library vendor then to see why the library is not decrypting the tape.

The encryption is done outside NetBackup, we know nothing about it and therefore can;t do anything to resolve the issue.

I wonder if the encryption keys that were used to encrypt the tape are available - this is a common reason for these sorts of issues with any type of encryption.

As my colleagues always says, encryption is easy, it's the key management that gets you ...

So in summary.

NBU requetss the tape.  The librarty encryption should decypt this tape 'outside of NBU'.

This is not happeneing, making the tape unreadable.

Right now Netbackup can do anything about the encrypted tape because its controlled by SKM Quantum Encryption as Martin has already pointed out.

But I do recommend that you switch to Netbackup KMS. This will let Netbackup control the encryption. And you are on dependent manufacture X solution for encrypting tapes.

Netbackup KMS is described high level here:
