v4.5 client versus EVault Protect & St Bernard OFM

Dave_R
Level 2
Hi All,

Seeking help with ;
Client: Windows NT4 Server SP6a
NetBackup: Windows Client v4.5 MP5 and/or v5.1 MP4

Possible clash between VSP and one or more of the following ;
EVault Protect v4.60
St Bernard Software Open File Manager v8.1
McAfee NetShield v4.3

Has anyone else ever tried to run NetBackup client v5.1 against any of the
software above? And succeeded? Is anyone aware of known incompatibilities?
Any recommendations?

Thanks,
Dave.

P.S. Read on if you want the nitty gritty...

I have one last Windows NT4 Server SP6a client running NetBackup v4.5 MP5
client. I have already tried once to upgrade this client to NetBackup v5.1
MP4. For the upgrade I did a full de-install of the NetBackup v4.5 client
and a full install of the v5.1 client followed by MP4 and a reboot. The
problem I had is that the client machine would lock up and other user
applications on it would hang. I had to completely de-install v5.1 MP4 and
go back to v4.5 MP5. The reason I did a full un-install of v4.5 and an
install of v5.1 is that I had several other NT4 SP6a boxes had problems
after a normal "upgrade" that were only solved be de-installing the client
completely.

My master and media servers are now running NetBackup Enterprise v6.0 MP1 in
Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition SP1, so I had to upgrade all my NT4
clients to at least a minimum of v5.0 MP4 before I could upgrade my master
and media servers.

The client machine in question is jointly managed, and hence it's in a bit
of a mess. My team look after the LAN, WAN, O/S and NetBackup - but another
side of the business look after the other tools and applications that run on
this machine. The box is severely underpowered (P3 800 MHz) and the other
team have been told several times that the machine really needs upgrading.

The problem NT4 client has over 500,000 files in a total file space of C:\
4gb, D:\ 4gb, and E:\ 40gb. I've done my best to set the NIC and NetBackup
buffer size, and I get a fair 1,200kb/s out of the client - considering it
used to be 600kb/s.

We recently had to replace one of the SCSI drives in the RAID array. The
RAID manager now shows the array and controller as healthy. But I'm still
getting "write behind cache failure" popup messages, from time to time, on
the console. And in the log files for both NetBackup and EVault I got a few
messages about some files ;
for NetBackup ;
ERR - failure reading file: blah\blah\blah (WIN32 31: A device
attached to the system is not functioning. )

and for EVault they show ;
"O/S message : A device attached to the system is not functioning"

I also have a problem when I try and run the v5.1 MP4 client alongside the
other software on the problem client, namely ;
EVault Protect v4.60.1502
St Bernard Software Open File Manager v8.1
McAfee NetShield v4.3.20

Strangely, when I use the "EVault Protect Central Control" software to check
the Open File Manager settings for EVault, it shows two possible "open file
management" modules, i.e. ;
St Bernard Software - Open File Manager (v8.1)
and CDP, Inc - Open Transaction Manager (v1.22 build 203)

Does anyone know if this "CDP, Inc" module is the Veritas OTM module? Maybe
the client would behave if both EVault and NetBackup were using the same
open file management modules?

Has anyone else ever tried to run NetBackup client v5.1 against any of the
software above? And succeeded? Is anyone aware of known incompatibilities?
Any recommendations?

Regards,
Dave.
