vCloud and hotadd

Hi,

I'm trying to get the hotadd transport mode working when backing up a vCloud VM. NBU is 7.6.0.1, and both the BKPHost/MediaServer (that's one VM with both fatures: BKP host and Media server) and the VM to be backed up belong to the same organization's virtual datacenter. The job always turns to nbd (This is so frustating folks). If I force the policy configuration to use only hotadd, it fails with an error code 24 (IIRC).

I've taken a look at the manual (of course), and to these:

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/hotadd-transport-isolated-media-server

VMware Transport Modes: Best practices and troubleshooting
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH183072

Regarding the second URL... Taking advange of this discussion, even though the following refers to restores, I wonder where one has to change this setting:
"Restores using Hotadd on a Windows Server 2008 proxy require setting the SAN policy to onlineAll"

Many thanks in advance!

Oops

The error is not 24 but 23: "Error opening the snapshot disks using given transport mode: Status 23".

hi,

I did a small change and a new try is going on. I don't think I'll have time to check the result today; so I guess this will have to wait until next week  :)

Have a nice weekend!

Hope it will get resolved... Keep us posted

I don't think that is my case. For example, this doesn't apply to me since nbd backups work: "vStorage backups are failing regardless of transport method selected in policy". Besides, My Administrator user has no C:\Users\Administrator\AppData directory.

Hi,

I'm back. My latest try, more (?) than a week ago. I'm going to try with what the frist link says: "When a HotAdd host is created from a clone or template, it sometimes is not able to link VMDKs correctly."

Rebuilding one of the two test backup hosts from scratch (ise without using a template VM)...

Hi,

This is still alive. I had to focus on something else and could devote very little time to this. There's a case open from Symantec Support, but I still have some homework pending. I'll try to update this thread.

Hi Pep-e

Check if SCSI controllers are configured on your ESXI hosts ?

Hi ChAmp35,

We already changed from Paravirtual to LSI, but the error persists. Also reported that to the engineer in charge of the case as Symantec. I am now installing another Bkp Host/Media from scratch without using a VM template, to see it that solves the issue. Our vCloud admin chose to open a case with VMware just to be safe. I will be funny if eventually everything boild down to some silly detail.

Cheers

After solving a minor issue related to VM selection when using the Query builder, I id a test and it worked, using HotAdd. The most remarkable difference now is that the Backup Host / Media server was installed from scratch, old way, instead of using a VM template to deploy it. Credentials are the same as at the beginning of this whole NBU+vCloud test exercise, vCloud configuration didn't change, and the query to choose the clients is working, but I managed to have it working at the beginning, too, and back then I was having this problem with HotAdd.

I am using two vDCs in this environment. For one the Bkp host derives from a template and for the other one (the one which is OK now) the Bkp host was built from scratch. I still intend to do some more checks. I would really like to nail the root cause of this. If it's the template thing, then great. At least that's something (not a ghostly misterious reason, I mean)!

Hi,

The Backup Host / Media server installation from scratch, that is, without using a VM template, did the trick. I put it to test twice, and twice the result was as the links provided by sri vani said: it worked.

Now not only Query builder works (inside the policy configuration dialog box), but also snapshots and all that comes with the VM backups. Great!

Thanks a lot to all four your help and patience. Also thanks to Symantec Support, of course.

Best
