vStorage API backups fail with status code 13

vStorage API backup, nbd transfer mode, is failing with error code 13 for the most of the VMs.

I get only few successful backups - all on same ESX host.

backup speed only max to 1MB/sec so I guess it must be caused by the slowness on the network, and I'm trying to get it fixed on network side.

while I'm doing that, I wonder if there are any tunables / settings that I can adjust in NetBackup, so that vStorage API backup waits long enough for the retransmit of data from the datastore, rather than simply throwing out status 13?

7.1.0.3 on Win2kR2x64, media server is the backup host.

There are quite a number of reasons for status 13. The info in details tab will help (as a start).

One of the reasons could be Client Read Timout. The default is 300 (5 minutes). This can be changed in Host Properties -> Media Server -> Timeouts.
