Hi All,

Need your help,

Facing issue with VM snapshot backups. On few VMs netbackup taking 5-6 TBs of data backup ( snapshot backup) whereas actuall data residing on VM is only 10-20 GB. On vcentre side manuall snasphot of same VM is 10-20 GB only so issue from netbackup side only. Also checked with other VM policy after unchecking accelarator , file level recovery etc uncheck but same issue. Please suggest ---

Netbackup master server version - 7.7.3

@ShafNyou need to provide some more data about your environment and the issue at hand. Without that it will take much longer to troubleshoot/suggest anything.

E.g. Detailed log of backup job, details about the backup policy using bppllist <policyname> -L , VM details (total data, snapshots size/number, etc.)

Hi ShafN,

As X2 as pointed out, please provide as much information as possible.  I would add to his list with the following additional info:

OS version of Master and Media server, NetBackup version of Media server, OS version of problem VM clients (and NetBackup client version if you have installed the client on the VM's), VMware/ESX version.

Two things that spring to mind without knowing more are:

  • Are these problem VM's Windows Server 2012 with Windows deduplication enabled on some or all of the filesystems?  If so, the data will be rehydrated when they are backed up.
  • It's possible the change block tracking (CBT) is screwed up.  I wouldn't expect this to increase the size that dramatically, but I have seen much stranger things.

Hope this helps,

Steve

hi All,

Thanks alot for your replies,

actually the issue was, there is a raw partition which is of some TeraBytes.

so we took off this vm from snapshot backups and doing agent based backups. and agent based backup size is in GBs

Thanks

Please check what type of LUN provision has done for the VMs, is it Thick or Thin provisioning.  If it is Thick Provisioning, it will backup complete Raw drive including the free space, as a snapshot, hence it takes more time to take the backup of complete disk space. If you have Thin, it will just backup only available data, not the rest of free space.

Prathap
