what does "Active" and "Non-Active" mean?

so i'm using a newfound tool named "Tape Summary". in it, i found group of tapes that belong to "Active" or "Non-Active" groups. i assumed that "Active" means currently in use or in the tape library but there is a tape that is ejected yet it says "Active".

after googling, i found this bit of description:

"Nonactive media are those with a status of FULL, FROZEN, SUSPENDED, or IMPORTED. Other volumes are considered active."

it's partially true to me because i find some tapes that are neither yet they are active.

so what really is the difference between "Active"  and "Non-Active" status?

I would have said the same as you have posed:

Inactive - Full. Suspended. Frozen etc ...

Active - Anything that can be written to  (being ejected from the library doesn't make it inactive)

You say "it's partially true to me because i find some tapes that are neither yet they are active."

Exactly what are you seeing that makes you think the statement is not true ?

Briefly said, Active media are :

1/ writable (from logical point of view)

2/ those with some non-expired backup(s)

Both conditions must be fulfilled.

All others are considered non-active. (so read-only media - from logical point of view).

There is no relation to physical location (in or out of library)
