working with SAN client question

NBU 7.7.3

just found out we have a license for SAN Client. as per my readings on what this is about, seems it will provide further speed improvement to my database backups by allowing the clients (the SAN clients) to write directly to storage (by passing NBU?).

question is, how will the restores be done?

SAN client does not bypass netbackup.

to make successfull backups using SAN client you need to have FT media server configured first...

in simple highlevel... SAN client sends data to FT media server over the SAN trasport and FT media server writes data into final storage. ( tape or disk)

the only difference with SAN client and regular client is data trasport... SAN clients data travels over SAN to media server, regular client data travles over the LAN to media server..

number of data hops remains same in both SAN and LAN client backups.

to provide speed improvemnets to your Database backups... you may perfert SAN media server instead of SAN client if LAN Network is the challange in your enviornment by eliminating additional media server hope.

SAN media server is nothing but the one that takes is own backups, so you can install Media server in Database server and configure storage devices and strorage units on it and send backups directly to stroge units configured with that server name.

Restore can de done through San Client if backup is done through San client and  SAN client configuration is done on client and FT media server.

Suggest you to go through Netbackup admin guide for SAN Client.

Hello

The SAN client will send data over the FT to media server for better backup performance.

The NBU service 'nbftclnt' on client responsible to send the data over the FT and nbftsrv service on media to receive data over the FT. The both service help to create tunnel which called FT pipes to send/receive the data over the FT.

If you have valid license then only the service get enable and if not then data will send over LAN.

It doesn't matter that data backedup via SAN or LAN. Whatever resources (SAN/LAN) available on Media and Client server to establish the connection/tunnel, will get used to perform the restore.

Thanks & Regards,
