Intel3.JPGWhen Lisa Graff, VP/GM of Intel’s Platform Engineering Group took the stage at a special event during SC ’11 Super Computing Conference in Seattle, I was not the only one who had wondered why the new launch was named EPSD 3.0, when there was no 2.0.  Within 10 minutes of her announcement speech, she articulated why it wasn’t just a 2.0!

Okay, what is EPSD? It stands for Intel Enterprise Platform and Services Division. This group designs and builds server board and related products for Channel and alliances. When Symantec, the world-leader in security and storage solutions, sought a partner to help deliver it's award winning backup software in an appliance form factor, it selected Intel EPSD for an enterprise class server board. The result can be found in the NetBackup 5220, a single-vendor, purpose-built, enterprise backup appliance from Symantec that decreases backup storage up to 50 times and bandwidth consumption by up to 99 percent.  It's helping customers modernize backup more quickly and lower the Op-Ex of backup.

Symantec selected Intel® architecture, not only because of its processing power and reliability, but for its scalable architecture that allows Symantec to build systems that can scale and evolve to customer needs. Intel’s architecture is also designed for power efficiency, which significantly lowers overall operating costs of the NetBackup 5220 appliance.

It was not surprising when Intel extended a special invitation for Symantec to showcase NetBackup 5220 appliance at this flagship event where just 5 partners were invited to participate and have conversations with the press. Symantec’s NetBackup and Intel Server board had proven the values for esteemed customers.

Now back to SC’11. It is EPSD 3.0 because Intel tripled the number of products to demands from various verticals. Lisa reiterated that EPSD 3.0 is the result of a pledge to dramatically improve the breadth and depth of server products available to channel customers. EPSD is delivering unprecedented investment and shared road map to the future. You can see some of new offerings here: http://communities.intel.com/docs/DOC-19124

It was exciting for me to share the story behind NetBackup 5220 at this conference.  A lot of conversations around why it is a true purpose-built backup appliance (not a mere storage target), its V-Ray capabilities to protect physical and virtual machines, ease of deployment and so on.
