There’s been a lot of recent discussion and news coverage focused on cyber attacks, system vulnerabilities and how companies can protect against malicious cyber threats. But here’s a staggering statistic for you – did you know that 75 percent of organizations have suffered a cyber attack in the past 12 months resulting in costs averaging $2 million annually? While 42% of organizations rate security as the top issue, they also report that enterprise security is becoming more difficult due to understaffing, new IT initiatives that intensify security issues and IT compliance issues.
Symantec’s new 2010 State of Enterprise Security Studyis based on surveys of 2,100 enterprise CIOs, CISOs and IT managers from 27 countries in January 2010. The study highlights data around the degree enterprises rank their level of concern about security, the number and level of cyber attacks during the past 12 months, how 100% of enterprises experienced cyber losses in 2009 and what those losses included, and how securing the enterprise is becoming more difficult due to understaffing, the need for new initiatives aside from providing security, and the complexities of IT compliance.
The report then follows on with recommendations of what areas organizations should focus on securing and why, how IT administrators can take both an information-centric and content-aware approach to protecting information, and the need to develop and enforce IT policies, and automate compliance processes.
