I have lots of friends in IT. When they ask what I am working on and I tell them about NetBackup, I sometimes get a response like “isn’t that for UNIX?” Seriously, I think we have been supporting Windows as a master server since Windows NT 3.5.1, an OS some of the kids have never even seen.
So is NetBackup a Windows solution?
Let me say it very plainly. NetBackup on Windows rocks!
Not only do we have support for Windows the operating system, we also support Windows applications like Exchange and SQL. In addition our customers frequently implement NetBackup itself on Windows.
I helped put together an online survey of NetBackup customers who attended our recent Symantec Vision Conference. When I posed the question about which operating systems were being used for NetBackup Master servers, almost 90% responded that they had at least one Windows system in that role. NetBackup media servers weren’t far behind with 69.5%.
So the next logical question might be, will NetBackup become a Windows only solution? The answer to that is a huge NO. Our customers deploy NetBackup servers on flavors of Linux, Solaris, HP-UX and AIX and a plethora of client systems too numerous to list. We will continue to best the best heterogeneous backup platform available.
