The leading 4 reasons to protect big data and open source database workloads

One of the most frequent comments I hear from customers utilizing big data or open source databases is, “I don’t need to backup my database because I have replication.” Unfortunately, this approach does not ideally protect your organization's data.

While many big data and open source databases offer some form of protection, such as replication, snapshots, or even inbuilt backup/recovery tools, they lack the point-in-time backup and recovery capabilities required to achieve and maintain enterprise-grade data protection.

As enterprises increasingly rely on non-traditional workloads for their mission critical applications, it’s more important than ever to understand the need for reliable backup and recovery of those environments.

Below, I’ve listed the leading 4 reasons to back up big data and open source database environments:

  • Data loss: The primary reason to create backups is to protect against accidental or malicious data loss due to logical or human error. Backups with off-site copies also protect against complete disaster situations.
  • Replication: Replication provides real-time to near-real-time protection, but does not protect from logical or human error that can result in data loss.
  • Manual recovery: While it’s sometimes possible to reconstruct data from the original data sources, in most situations the data will either be lost or unavailable from the source, or the reconstruction process is time-prohibitive.
  • Application downtime: According to a 2016 Ponemon Institute study, the mean cost of an unplanned outage per minute is $8,851, or approximately $530,000 per hour. Because many big data or open source database environments are utilized for mission critical applications, this could have a significant compliance and/or monetary impact your organization.
