I have to show a demonstration of VR advisor to one of my client. Can somebody please elaborate how can i accomplish this?

I have studied the VR advisor user's guide but i am little confused.

Shall i create a new replication setup in order to test VR advisor?

VR advisor works on windows replication only or on linux replication as well?

Any guidance will be highly appreciated

Info in 6.0 is now in the Vradmin guide http://www.symantec.com/business/support/resources/sites/BUSINESS/content/live/DOCUMENTATION/5000/DO...

in section "Analyzing your environment with Volume Replicator Advisor"

where is says:

VRAdvisor enables you to analyze data collected on any of the supported platforms.
However, to analyze the data, you must install and use VRAdvisor on either a
Solaris or a Windows system.

Vradvisor is a tool to help you determine the bandwidth and SRL requirements of a VVR installation, so you don't need to create a new replication setup.  Vradvisor is for UNIX, Linux and Windows and it works by collecting I/O stats on the server you want to install the VVR primary on and then the tool analyses the stats to work out peak and average bandwidth.  On Linux you can collect the I/O stats yourself or I think there is a tool on vradvisor to collect stats.

I have found all I have said and more in the Vradvisor user guide:

About collecting the sample of data

You need to collect data write samples that can be used with the VRAdvisor wizard.
VRAdvisor uses the sample of data for analysis.

Best practices for collecting the sample of data

When collecting the sample of data, observe the following best practices:

■ We recommend that you collect the samples of data using the volumes that
are to be part of the VVR configuration you are planning to set up.
■ To collect a representative sample of data, we recommend that you collect the
sample of data over a period of 7 to 14 days.

Note: The data must be collected for a minimum of seven days.

■ Make sure that the collection period includes times of peak usage for your
application, so that the collected data reflects your actual requirements.

VRAdvisor calculates an optimum size of the Storage Replicator Log (SRL) and
the network for your VVR configuration using a sample of the write statistics.
Depending on the operating system on which you are collecting data, you can
either collect the sample of data using the VRAdvisor wizard, commands, or the
data collection script.

For details, refer to the section for your platform as follows:

■ Collecting the sample of data on UNIX
■ Collecting the sample of data on Windows

Collecting the sample of data on UNIX

VRAdvisor can be used to collect a sample of data for analysis. You can collect
data using the VRAdvisor wizard, vxstat, or the data collection script. To use the
VRAdvisor wizard to collect data, you must install VRAdvisor on the system for
which you are collecting data. If you do not plan to install VRAdvisor on the
system, you can use the data collection script to collect data and use VRAdvisor
on another system to analyze the results.
On UNIX, collect the sample of data using one of the following methods:

■ Collecting data using the VRAdvisor wizard
■ Collecting data using the vxstat command
■ Collecting data using the data collection script

Now i install VR Advisor on the primary linux node and collect data?

I mean, is VR advisor available for Linux/Unix ?

Thanks Mike.

What i have understood so far from the discussion is that, i can collect data on Linux primary node using vxstat command and then i can analyze the collected data using VR Advisor on any windows machine. Please correct me if i am wrong.

Hi Atif,

That's correct.  You can gather the statistics on any OS platform but the tool to analyse the statistics is currently only available on Windows.
