VVR across two Nodes in a different Time Zone

Hi Team,

We intend to implement VCS / VVR to provide a disaster recovery solution for our production Oracle 10G database based on a AIX 5.3 Host in Sweden. The database volume(s) will be replicated to a AIX 5.3 Host based in the UK which holds an existing and separate Oracle 10G database.

Is anybody able to suggest any issue(s) if any the different time zone may introduce at failover time.

Many thanks for all feedback

Steve

Stephen,

Same timezone at both sites is not a minimum requirement of vvr setup.

For a normal failover / migration between Primary and DR sites, the replication status should be up-to-date. If DR site is somewhat behind on data sync, it will not allow you for role migration until it comes to up-to-date status. However you can start production at DR site forcely by detaching rlinks.

Steve,

As far as failover to DR ( GCO ) site is concerned, it should not be a problem with different time zone until and unless underlying application does not have any issue with different time zone.

Thats a really interesting question.... however to my knowledge .. it is very common for VVR to operate in different timezones ... thats actually how DR is setup (usually in two different countries)...

I don't think any issues would be there to normal operations however there might me manual interventions needed when you are troubleshooting VVR..... for e.g if VVR got broken for some reason & primary site fails & you land up in a situation where you need to make your DR as primary.... you will need to think/know very well last updated data (as that would be in different timezone).... manual calculations might be needed in such scenarios... If the replication was working & primary site fails then it won't be this difficult... however if replication was not working somehow for some days... & then u get a situation where you need to migrate... then might be difficult..

your application, in this case Oracle should also have correct handling of data irrespective of timezone..

rest should be ok..

You haven't mentioned if you are using GCO, In case you are using GCO..... then troubleshooting needs to be careful since logs at primary & DR will be at different timezones.... so u will need to be extra careful looking in logs to match the events happening Primary & DR..
