I have an exchange server and i want to replicate it to another exchange server at a DR site. Where should i install the software storage foundation for HA/DR server and client components

a) On a separate server and then select both the exchange server during installation prompt.

or

b) One on exchange server and then select both the exchange server during installation prompt for push install. The client component can be installed on any simple desktop.

Please suggest which is the right option?

You will need to install SFWHA server/client components on both Exchange servers. Generally, you perform a push install from one server and push install to another or install it locally on both individually. (Some admins prefer installing it one at a time separately just in case there are install issues or network issues during push install)

You can do either A or B, but the norm is B, so you would:

unzip software on one exchange server and run setup and enter both exchange servers during installation prompt.

If you have lots of clusters to install, you could do A, so for example:

  • Extract software on server E:
  • Run Install on E, to push software to cluster comprising of nodes A and B
  • Run Install on E, to push software to cluster comprising of nodes C and D

Another way is to:

  • Share out software on server E
  • Run install ONLY (no configure) on EACH server using network drive (this is often does with silent non-interactive install)
  • Run config on node A to configure cluster comprising of nodes A and B (this can also be done with silent install)
  • Run config on node C to configure cluster comprising of nodes C and D  (this can also be done with silent install)
