Not sure what you are referring to here - when you install SF, it gives you the option to set a default dg, creating a new dg named datadg is still a separate step.

If your aim is to create a new diskgroup named datadg, you can use vxdiskadm

(example from 5.0, format should still be similar for 5.1)
# vxdiskadm

Volume Manager Support Operations
Menu: VolumeManager/Disk

1      Add or initialize one or more disks
2      Encapsulate one or more disks
 3      Remove a disk
4      Remove a disk for replacement
5      Replace a failed or removed disk
6      Mirror volumes on a disk
7      Move volumes from a disk
8      Enable access to (import) a disk group
9      Remove access to (deport) a disk group
10     Enable (online) a disk device
11     Disable (offline) a disk device
12     Mark a disk as a spare for a disk group
13     Turn off the spare flag on a disk
14     Unrelocate subdisks back to a disk
 15     Exclude a disk from hot-relocation use
16     Make a disk available for hot-relocation use
 17     Prevent multipathing/Suppress devices from VxVM's view
 18     Allow multipathing/Unsuppress devices from VxVM's view
 19     List currently suppressed/non-multipathed devices
20     Change the disk naming scheme
21     Get the newly connected/zoned disks in VxVM view
22     Change/Display the default disk layouts
23     Mark a disk as allocator-reserved for a disk group
24     Turn off the allocator-reserved flag on a disk
 list   List disk information

 ?      Display help about menu
??     Display help about the menuing system
 q      Exit from menus

The relevant option here would be option 1 "Add or initialize one or more disks"

For more details, take a look at the VxVM Administrator's Guide (link below for Solaris, if you're using a different platform go to http://vos.symantec.com/documents and select the docs for the appropriate platform):

Install process asks for setting a defaultdg.

You set defaultdg for your convenience, so that if you want to run any vx commands & if you don't give DG name in the vx command, it will be triggered on your defaultdg.

For e.g if you have set defaultdg as "datadg"  & if you want to create a volume & you run a vxassist command

# vxassist make testvol 100M

In above case you have not given (vxassist -g testdg) as command will run by default on datadg.

You can set defaultdg by

# vxdctl defaultdg <diskgroup_name>

Thanks Gaurav and lee for your detailed explaination. But the method we adopted in HA 5.0 solution is as follows.

Go to VERITAS installer location (For e.g. /Veritas/VSF_HA_5.0/installer)
Execute the installer file .
Enter “I” and “5” for installing complete VSF HA 5.0 package
Enter the  system hostname and click Enter.
Give the required SF license (which includes VSF HA,VVR & VCS with GCO support)
Choose “2” for installing All Veritas Storage Foundation. Then click ENTER.
Press “Y” for  configuring Storage Foundation
Press “N” for configuring VCS
Press “N” for configuring Enclsoure based naming schemes
Press “Y” for  setting up default disk group – Give the name for disk group as datadg

So we are looking for this last option to configure datadg as part of installer menu. Is this not available as part of HA 5.1 configuration procedure

Sri

As per g_lee's post:
5.0 installer gives you the option to set a default dg, creating a new dg named datadg is still a separate step.

As per Gaurav's post, setting the defaultdg is a quick one-step command (do this after the install):

# vxdctl defaultdg <diskgroup_name>

The fact that 5.1 no longer prompts you to set the defaultdg should therefore not be a problem, right?

Sri one more point,

In the last step

Press “Y” for  setting up default disk group – Give the name for disk group as datadg

If you say yes & give a name as "datadg",  datadg would be set as defaultdg  however datadg doesn't exist yet. I am not sure volume manager will make a check whether datadg exists or no since it is just setting up a variable value.

as mentioned by all, you will anyways need to create datadg manually anyhow.

create a new datadg diskgroup using command vxdg.. (manually)

vxdg init datadg disk1=cxtxdx

Thanks for Gaurav and  Kanag.

we have used this command and tried creating the disk group.
vxdg init datadg disk1=cxtxdx cds =off

Following error message have come.
bash-3.00# ./vxdg init datadg disk=c1t3d0 cds=off
VxVM vxdg ERROR V-5-1-585 Disk group datadg: cannot create: Disk private region contents are invalid

We have formatted the disk before trying that command.

Can any one please  give us solution to create the disk group

When you say you "formatted the disk", presumably you mean you labelled the disk with format?

Before you add the disk to the disk group, it needs to be initialised/set up as a VxVM disk.

If this is a brand new disk (ie: no data exists on the disk), initialize with the following command:
# vxdisksetup -i cXtXdX
Note: this is desctructive, so don't do this if you need to preserve data on this disk
You can also do this with vxdiskadm if you prefer using the menu (see option 1)

then add it to the dg with the vxdg command specified earlier.
