EOSS for Veritas File System 5.0 MP3 RP3

Walkervr53

We have been encouraged to upgrade from VFS 5.0 MP3 RP3 to VFS 5.1 SP1 RP1.  This is going to be a costly upgrade, so we are trying to determine the best time to do this.  We are trying to find out the end of support for VFS 5.0 MP3 RP3 on the Symantec web site with no success.  Does anyone know the EOSS for this product?  Thanks...vw

The link is https://sort.symantec.com/eosl/show_matrix
You can check the product that you want in that list and check all dates (EOSS, etc.). Click on "Details" for that particular product/release.

E.g. Storage Foundation (Basic) 5.0 MP3 for Solaris (which include File System) is at https://sort.symantec.com/eosl/show_detail/56878

It shows

Country Product lifecycle item Date
Worldwide Release Date 2008-10-06
Worldwide End of Assisted Support 2013-08-06
Worldwide End of Engineering Support 2012-06-07

Vertitas File System is part of Storage Fountdation and you can find EOL details at: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=releasedetails&key=15107

Which for Solaris 5.0MP3 RP3 shows:

2008-10-06

2012-06-07
Last date for patch releases

2013-08-06

For other products choose product at http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=products&locale=en_us and then click on "Release Details" link.

Please tell us what you mean by "This is going to be a costly upgrade"?

Costly as far as license fees are concerned or as far as time/downtime and effort is concerned?

If your annual maintenance is up to date, the upgrade is free.

As far as time and effort is concerned, my own upgrade from 5.0MP3 (including VCS) completed in about 15 minutes. This was by far the easiest upgrade that I've done in the +- 10 years of using SF.

Marianne,

Thanks for the reply.  The cost (about $30k) is for a consultant to come in and spend 12 days upgrading 3 different environments.  We are appalled by this and don't understand why it takes so long and cost so much.  Your estimate sounds much better.  This our first VSF upgrade, so we have no idea what we are in for.  We are only taking the word of the consultant.  Here is his assumptions and tasks/estimates for each environment...

Assumptions:

- Customer has Installed RHEL 5.5 on new servers
- Servers can see existing storage and CFS
- Servers have SDD installed and configured
- Work can be done remotely - if we need to be onsite then travel charges need to be added.

Tasks:

- Install SF 5.0mp3rp3 on new RHEL 5.5 servers - 8 hrs
- Add two new RHEL 5 servers to existing CFS cluster - 8 hrs, after hours
- Shutdown Existing RHEL 4 servers - 0 hrs, after hours
- Remove old RHEL 4 servers from Cluster - 8 hrs, after hours
- Upgrade new RHEL 5 servers to SF 5.1sp1rp1 - 8 hrs, after hours

Any feedback you can provide will be greatly appreciated....Vaughan
