Can any one tell me the meaning of Master server? Is it the combination of two or more database servers?

The master server schedules and maintains backup history.

Think of it as an NFS server.
It is handling the multiple nodes writing to shared file system.
Also some administrative tasks like mounting a new shared file system can only be done on master node.
