OC site has RHEL 4.4, DR site has RHEL 4.8, is this supported?

As the title says,
We have Redhat EL 4.4 or Redhat EL 4.5 on our OC site, and we will need to install Redhat EL 4.8 on DR site as Dell certifies 4.8 on their new servers. Both will be x64...

I need to make sure if:
1. SF 5.0MP3 can be used and supported on this setup?
2. VVR is supported on this setup?

Thanks and Regards,

Savas.

Finding support information is a minefield... After about 30 minutes of searching, I found the following in the VVR admin guide:
http://sfdoccentral.symantec.com/sf/5.0MP3/linux/pdf/vvr_admin.pdf
p. 20:
Supports cross-platform replication, that is, the Primary and Secondary can have different operating systems.

Supported Linux versions are listed in the Release Notes:
http://sfdoccentral.symantec.com/sf/5.0MP3/linux/pdf/sf_notes.pdf
p.26 & 27:
Supported Linux operating systems
This section lists the supported Linux operating systems for this release of Veritas Storage Foundation products, including Veritas Storage Foundation Cluster File System.

The Veritas 5.0 MP3 release operates on the following operating systems and hardware:
■ Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (RHEL 4) with Update 3 (2.6.9-34 kernel) or later on AMD Opteron or Intel Xeon EM64T (x86_64).
■ Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (RHEL 5) with Update 1 (2.6.18-53.el5 kernel) or later on AMD Opteron or Intel Xeon EM64T (x86_64)
■ SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 (SLES 9) with SP3 (2.6.5-7.244 kernel or later)
or SP4 (2.6.5-7.308 kernel or later) on AMD Opteron or Intel Xeon EM64T
(x86_64)
■ SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 (SLES 10) with SP1 (2.6.16.46-0.12 kernel or
later) or SP2 (2.6.16.60-0.21 kernel or later) on AMD Opteron or Intel Xeon EM64T (x86_64)
■ Oracle Enterprise Linux 4.4 or later on AMD Opteron or Intel Xeon EM64T (x86_64)
■ Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.1 or later on AMD Opteron or Intel Xeon EM64T (x86_64)
If your system is running an older version of either Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, or Oracle Enterprise Linux, you must upgrade it before attempting to install the Veritas Storage Foundation software. Consult the Red Hat, SUSE, or Oracle documentation for more information on upgrading or reinstalling your system.

Symantec supports only Oracle, Red Hat, and SUSE distributed kernel binaries.
Symantec products operate on subsequent kernel and patch releases provided the operating systems maintain kernel ABI (application binary interface) compatibility.

Information about the latest supported Red Hat erratas and updates and SUSE service packs is available in the following TechNote. Read this TechNote before you install Symantec products.
http://entsupport.symantec.com/docs/281993

The Veritas 5.0 MP3 release is also supported on the Xen platform for Linux, with some restrictions.
See the Appendix, Veritas Storage Foundation 5.0 MP3 for Xen, in the Storage Foundation Release Notes for more information.

As per VVR release notes for 5.0 (no release notes for MP3), RHEL U3 & above should be supported....

http://sfdoccentral.symantec.com/sf/5.0/linux/pdf/vvr_notes.pdf

see page 10 on above...

Above document also says that you can have cross VVR version replication, that means you can replicate between 4.1 VVR & 5.0 VVR & vice versa however it doesn't say about replicating between different OS updates...

As far my experience, VVR should replicate between U4 & U8 of RHEL 4 however since symantec is not listing it into release notes, for symantec this would be unsupported (non tested) configuration...

Does this mean, Global Clustering is also supported on cross-platforms (meaning between RHEL4.4 and RHEL 4.8)?

Thank you,

Savas.

We cannot just assume... Finding the answer will require a new hunt through the minefield indecision.
I will assist when I get a chance, but mabe you can start by looking at some docs:
https://vos.symantec.com/documents/doc_details/sfha/5.0%20MP3/Linux/ProductGuides/

I'm thinking of starting with VCS Release Notes, VCS Install Guide and VCS User's Guide... (in that order).

Found the following in Cluster Release Notes:
VCS requires that all nodes in the cluster use the same processor architecture and run the same operating system version. However, the nodes can have different update levels for a specific RHEL or OEL version, or different service pack levels for a specific SLES version.

And this in the Cluster User Guide:

Prerequisites for global clusters
This section describes the prerequisites for configuring global clusters.
Cluster setup
You must have at least two clusters to set up a global cluster. Every cluster must have the required licenses. A cluster can be part of one global cluster. VCS supports a maximum of four clusters participating in a global cluster.
Clusters must be running on the same platform; the operating system versions can be different. Clusters must be using the same VCS version.
