SFORA-HA 5.0 on Solaris 10 - New setup Preparation

Hi - I am planning to setup a 2 node Veritas Storage Foundation for
Oracle with HA 5.0 (SFORA-HA 5.0) on SPARC based Sun servers.

Sun Server Details : Sun Enterprise M5000(Single domain) and SunFire
v1280

OS Details : # cat /etc/release

                       Solaris 10 8/07 s10s_u4wos_12b SPARC

Copyright 2007 Sun Microsystems, Inc.  All Rights Reserved.

Use is subject to license terms.

                            Assembled 16 August 2007

# uname -a

SunOS fuji 5.10 Generic_120011-14 sun4u sparc SUNW,Netra-T12

#

HBAs : Sun Branded Emulex cards which use SUNWemlxs driver.

Storage : 3Par - InServ S400

SAN Fabric : Brocade 5520

It is a Core distribution of Solaris 10 with ssh remote access. I went
through the http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/281987.htm and read
through (not every page of the document though ;-)) release notes and
maintenance pack and roll-up patch details.

Now, my questions are,

1.    Should I install SFORA-HA 5.0 first on both the nodes and
configure the VxVM, VxFS, VCS etc. then proceed with MP1 and roll-up
patches installation
2.    Or Should I install SFORA-HA 5.0, follow with MP1 installation,
then configure VxVM, VxFS, VCS etc. then proceed with roll-up patches
3.    Or Should I install SFORA-HA 5.0, follow with MP1 and roll-up
patches installation and then configure everything.

Kindly clarify this. Also, please let me know if there is any simple
cluster setup guide to set this up ( I promise to make and put one after
I am done with this installation).

Also in 2 or 4 weeks time, I will be adding two more SunFire v1280 nodes
in to this cluster. Before adding them to the cluster, should I have
them patched with same exact level of patches as these two production
cluster nodes have got and whats the best practice to add them without
creating any glitches to existing two nodes ?

Kindly share your thoughts.

Thanks,

Karthik Sethupathy

Kartik,

3.    Or Should I install SFORA-HA 5.0, follow with MP1 and roll-up
patches installation and then configure everything.

I'd choose this option. In fact, before doing any configuration, I usually take a flash archive of one of the initial nodes and use that to quickly roll out the whole distro. Rather than waste cycles on first an OS build, then the software install then upgrade to MP1 and then patching, I take a flash archive of the "complete" image (full with OS, patches, SF + MP).

After it's done, I simply configure VxVM (it's a 4 step process --

# vxdctl init
# vxdctl enable
# rm /etc/vx/reconfig.d/state.d/install-db

If you want to encapsulate, do so using vxdiskadm or from the cmd line --

Hi,

Bit late in the day for a reply I suspect, but I would go with Option 3, saves on time and effort.

M5000 - nice bit of kit, still on V880/890's here Smiley Sad
