VxVM 4.1 and Solaris upgrade

cobra188d

Hello, I've inherited a Sun Ultra 80 with an A1000 array attached.  The 80 is running Solaris 8 with VxVM 4.0.  I'm comfortable with Solaris but have lots of reading to do on VxVM.....that I can handle...

My problem is that the 80 needs to be upgraded to Solaris 10 so I have a few questions:

Is it true that I'll need to upgrade to Solaris 10 then upgrade to VxVM 4.1?

Where do I get VxVM 4.1?

Will I need a new license for VxVM?

Any whitepapers on this upgrade, documentation or pitfalls such as additional patches for Solaris after either upgrade?

Thanks

Hello,

very first thing I would point out is, even 4.1 is a pretty old version, neither me nor symantec would recommend that.. instead you can look for possibility of upgrading to 5.1SP1 (latest supported) ..

To answer your questions now:

Is it true that I'll need to upgrade to Solaris 10 then upgrade to VxVM 4.1?

==> As per system requirements for 4.1, it supports sol 8 / 9 & 10 ... see below link:

https://sort.symantec.com/public/documents/sf/4.1/solaris/pdf/sf_notes.pdf

page 22

System Requirements
Solaris Operating System Requirements
The VERITAS Storage Foundation 4.1 product line operates on the following Solaris
operating systems:
Solaris 8 (32-bit and 64-bit)
Solaris 9 (32-bit and 64-bit)
Solaris 10 (64-bit)
Storage Foundation verifies that the target machine is running a required version of the
Solaris operating system. Storage Foundation installation will fail if the product discovers
an incorrect Solaris version

Where do I get VxVM 4.1?

==>  Thats little difficult part... however you can try  https://fileconnect.symantec.com

you will need to be ready with serial keys (you might have received it with product or paper license)

Will I need a new license for VxVM?

==> existing 4.0 licenses will work with 4.1 however 4.1 onwards license keys were alpha numeric which were initially numeric only. Also you may not be able to use new features of 4.1 with old keus, I would suggest to get new keys, you can get that by contacting symantec licensing team or your sales representative..

Any whitepapers on this upgrade, documentation or pitfalls such as additional patches for Solaris after either upgrade?

==> Everything available here:

https://sort.symantec.com/documents/doc_details/sfha/4.1/Solaris/ProductGuides/SPARC

have a look at SF install guide...
