SFHA Solutions 6.0.1: Migrating volumes to Veritas Volume Manager

When you install Storage Foundation, you may already have some volumes that are controlled by Solaris Volume Manager (SVM) on Solaris, and Logical Volume Manager (LVM) on AIX, HP-UX and Linux. You can preserve your data and migrate these volumes to Veritas Volume Manager (VxVM) volumes. The following table lists the supported migration methods for each platform.

Volume migration from SVM to VxVM on Solaris

If you run Storage Foundation on Solaris, you can use the offline VxVM conversion utilities to migrate all SVM objects into VxVM objects, encapsulate the file systems and swap device partitions used by SVM. Solaris does not support online volume migration.

For more information on offline migration from SVM to VxVM, see:

Offline migration from Solaris Volume Manager to Veritas Volume Manager

Volume migration from LVM to VxVM on AIX, HP-UX and Linux

If you run Storage Foundation on AIX and HP-UX, you can use the offline or online methods to convert volumes from LVM to VxVM. Linux only supports offline migration.

Offline migration from LVM to VxVM

The offline migration procedures are different for unused disks and the disks in volume groups:

  • Converting unused LVM physical volumes to VxVM disk. This applies to unused disks that contain no user data, and are not used by any volume group, but which have LVM disk headers.

For information on converting unused LVM disks on different platforms, see:

AIX: Initializing unused LVM physical volumes as VxVM disks

HP-UX: Converting unused LVM physical volumes to VxVM disks

Linux: Converting unused LVM physical volumes to VxVM disks

  • Converting LVM volume groups to VxVM disk groups. This applies to LVM disks in volume groups that contain logical volumes.

For information on converting LVM volume groups on different platforms, see:

AIX: Converting LVM volume groups to VxVM disk groups

HP-UX: Converting LVM volume groups to VxVM disk groups

Linux: LVM volume group to VxVM disk group conversion

Online migration from LVM to VxVM

Online migration provides a convenient way to migrate existing applications running on native LVM volumes to VxVM volumes, with limited downtime. For information on online migration from LVM to VxVM, see:

About online migration from Logical Volume Manager (LVM) volumes to Veritas Volume Manager (VxVM) vo...

Depending on your environment, there are two ways to migrate volumes online:

  • Migrating LVM volumes in a Veritas Cluster Server (VCS) High Availability (HA) environment. This supports the VCS cluster system with failover type high availability.

For information on migrating LVM volumes in VCS HA environment, see:

AIX: Online migration from LVM volumes in VCS HA environment to VxVM volumes

HP-UX: Online migration from LVM volumes in VCS HA environment to VxVM volumes

  • Migrating LVM volumes in a standalone environment. This supports a single host, in a non-HA environment.

For information on migrating LVM volumes in a standalone environment, see:

AIX: Online migration from LVM volumes in standalone environment to VxVM volumes

HP-UX: Online migration from LVM volumes in standalone environment to VxVM volumes
