The Veritas Volume Manager (VxVM) vxconfigrestore utility allows you to restore a disk group's configuration information if it is lost or has become corrupted. The restore process requires a disk group configuration backup file. The vxconfigbackupd daemon creates a backup file whenever a disk group configuration changes. You can also run the vxconfigbackup command to create a backup file at any point.
Restoration of a disk group configuration has two stages: precommit and commit. The precommit stage allows you to temporarily load the backed up configuration in read-only mode, and examine it using the vxprint utility. The changes are permanently written to disk only when you choose to commit them.
When you back up and restore a disk group configuration file, also note the following points:
- None of the disks or VxVM objects in the disk group must be in use during the restore operation.
- You must restore a disk group on the same physical disks as are defined in the configuration backup files.
- As the configuration backup and restore utilities do not save or restore any data in the public region, if there is any File System or application data on the disks, it is left as is.
