The vxdctl utility manages aspects of the state of the volume configuration daemon (vxconfigd), sets the default disk group for the system, and also sets up the boot disk group if the root disk is under Veritas Volume Manager (VxVM) control.

You can use the vxdctl utility to:

  • Control the operation of the vxconfigd daemon.
  • Change the system-wide definition of the default disk group.

For more information on the vxconfigd daemon, see:

About the configuration daemon in Veritas Volume Manager

You can use the vxdctl utility to perform the following administrative tasks:

  • Perform disk discovery using the vxdctl enable command.
  • Reconfigure the Dynamic Multi-Pathing (DMP) database to include disk devices newly attached to, or removed from the system.
  • Create DMP device nodes in the /dev/vx/dmp and /dev/vx/rdmp directories.
  • Update the DMP database with changes in the path type for active/passive disk arrays.
  • Check the cluster protocol version.
  • Set the site name attribute.

For more information on using the vxdctl utility, see:

You can also use the vxdctl utility to enable and disable command completion for VxVM and DMP commands. For more information on using the vxdctl utility to enable or disable command completion, see:

Command completion for Veritas commands
