BESR Questions

We have been using the standard Backup Exec programs for several years, and have been very happy with it.  Now we are trying out BE System Recovery 2010.  The program interface is a lot different, and we are having trouble getting the program to do what we want it to do.

We have a single eSata backup drive, and 5 drives for backup (M-F).  We tried setting up a full backup every night, but some of them are erroring out saying "not enough disk space" even though we thought we had it set to overwrite old backups.

We would also like 1 email notification if the job completes or fails.  This was easy to do in standard BE, but in BESR - we now get 5 emails saying everything from "job started" to "recovery point created sucesfully".

What is the best way to setup backup jobs?  Is there a best practices guide somewhere?

Generally speaking, the free space needed on the backup destination should have at least 1.5x the amount of data you are trying to back up.

When creating a backup job, you can designate how many backup sets to retain. To comply, Symantec System Recovery (SSR) will only delete the oldest backup once the newest is complete and successful. Thus, for example, if you set a job to retain 3 backups and the amount of data being backed up is 100Gb, there should be at least 450Gb total available with 150Gb free when the backup kicks off.

As for email notification, admittedly, this is a sore spot with BE users that also use SSR. The email notification will send multiple emails for whatever error level you have chosen, but there is not an option to send a 1 success or fail after each job. This is one of the most requested features in the next build of the software.

Please reply with any other questions that you have.
