Backup Exec seeing dependencies that don't exist

KenWK

We have a new client using Backup Exec set up to delete old backup sets as space is needed.

The problem they seem to be having is that Backup Exec is deleting the old backup set from the disk correctly, but emails "Error E98F0038: Specified object cannot be removed as dependency exist" and does NOT remove the deleted set from its recovery points list in Manage Backup Destination.

I'll say here that there are no dependencies because there are no incremental backups, they're all full backups.

When we go into Manage Backup Destination BE immediately indicates that files are missing for certain sets and do we want to delete them, when we delete them all is well. However, we have to manually go in and do so every day. If we don't, the next time around BE seems to use its list of backup recovery points (still containing the old / deleted sets) to determine what disk space is left, rather than simply checking the actual disk space. It then deletes 2 or 3 sets (1 or 2 too many!) instead of just one.

Does anyone konw what might be causing BE to think there are dependencies?

Many thanks,
Ken

Hi

Is this Backup exec system recovery ?As there is known issue with the error you have mention above please check below link & there is private fix available to resolve this issue so would insist you to call symantec support and refer the link

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH198360

Thanks

Hello Sameer, thanks for responding, sorry I hadn't gotten back to this yet. Yes, it is Backup Exec System Recovery 2010. The known issue you sent (http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH198360) doesn't seem to be quite the same as what we have going on. We're not running out of disk space, the old recovery points are getting deleted from the disk. The problem seems to be that Backup Exec isn't removing the old recovery points from its list when it deletes the recovery points from the disk. On the next back up it then seems to use its list (rather than the actual disk space) to determine what needs to be deleted. Because it still has old recovery points in its list (that were actually already deleted) it then deletes additional sets unnecessarily. When the it deletes the sets it sends an email with this message: Date: 1/3/2013 2:21:30 AM Notification Type: Info Priority: High Description: Info 6C8F043E: Recovery point [IoSafe]\Full_Daily_Backup\tntweb1_C_Drive505.v2i deleted to comply with the size of recovery points to save for each drive. Error E98F0038: Specified object cannot be removed as dependency exist. However, dependancies don't actually exist as all the backups are full backups, none are incremental. When we go into Backup Exec's "Manage backup destination" it display's its dialog warning that recovery points are missing and lists the recovery points it previously deleted. I hope this makes sense. Thanks again, Ken
